The record industry, digital, analog - a must see.

With all the discussion on the music industry and formats recently - this post is for those members who can stream Netflix. Find the documentary 'I Need That Record!' and watch and learn. It provides a lot of perspective on the industry as a whole, different media formats, big box chains, indy record labels, and radio.

I was already aware of most of what was presented to me as we viewed this last night, but it also provided a lot of facts and was pretty decent indy documentary.

If you don't have Netflix, maybe try to find it on Amazon, it's really worth seeing if you care about music, and where we've been and where we're headed.

2008NR 77 minutes
Imperiled by the rise of downloadable music and the chaotic state of the record industry, the American independent record store is fast becoming a dying breed, as chronicled in Brendan Toller's shout-out to these beloved spaces. The documentary captures visits to indie record stores across the country, and includes interviews with Dischord Records founder Ian Mackaye, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, philosopher Noam Chomsky and many others.

I'm surprised it took you this long to see it since you're more media oriented than I am for the most part. It's a great documentary and recommendation.

Mark, honestly, I had no idea it existed, and never even thought to look for it. If you have any others up your audio sleeve, send me another suggestrion to check out. You are the one that has found the audio 'books' in our journey, Leak, McIntosh, etc. I think perhaps you are more ontop of media info, than I am media itself.

They have a website, you can watch online also - http://www.ineedthatrecord.com/Site/I_Need_That_Record%21.html

    Cheers,
    Russ

Russ, I have a couple more audio books for your collection that are a part of your package. I only knew about that documentary thru a local DC audio society dude. Written subject matter is where I get wrapped up in, believe me, not so much the other half.

What I meant as far as media from you is everything non digital, you know. You're my bookmark for a lot of vintage stuff period.....from tubes, vinyl and mainly gear.

It's been in my queue for a while, but I finally watched it last week. Great documentary. Mostly it made me melancholy because some of the best times I've had in my life were in connection to indie record stores. I used to travel quite a bit for my job (five different states fairly regularly) and I couldn't wait until 5pm hit so I could go hunting for local indie record stores. There was a time when I could find five or six in any given town. That's not the case any longer.

And the country is a worse place because of it.
