After dark lounge music

After years of blowing my brains hard with classic rock and noise rock, I have developed an interest in more mellow musc--primarily female vocals, in what I would call later night, lounge music...sultry, slow, low...not fast jazz stuff.

Sade might be an example...Beth Gibbons maybe....I've been listening to some Latin fusion tango music (Gotan Project and Frederico Aubele) and there is some of that in that genre....

India.Arie comes to mind (though not sure she has ever been in a NY Lounge).

This is about 180 degrees from my past listening habits, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

    ummm.... I fully realize this isn't, on the surface, the kind of thing you're thinking of... but... have you listened to Cowboy Junkies? They've got the sultry female vocalist (ooooh, Margo), the lugubrious tempos, the laid-back groove, and good to excellent recording technical values.

    I went on the same type of path...really getting into some jazz.

    You might like these for that late night jazz/smooth jazz groove.

    I love that kind of music...

    Shelby Lynne's Just a little lovin'

    Sia Color the small one (later stuff not so much) and if you like Sia check out Zero 7s older stuff

    Over the Rhine's Drunkard's Prayer is more in line with Cowboy Junkie, but great voice

    If you like sade and india arie then you might like Beth Orton's Daybreaker and Trailer Park

    Along the lines of Sade is Dido's Safe trip home and Joan as Police Women's To survive

    I have lots more suggestions if you're interested...

    I had to check the username because I may as well have written that post. I'm in the same boat. As my audio equipment got better I wanted to "hear" the instruments more and realized that the loud stuff I used to live on (Rush, Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater) was sounding more and more overproduced with less and less dynamic headroom. I've never really been into female vocal jazz before but I really enjoy it lately.

    Try listening to "What's New" by Linda Ronstadt with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. It sends chills down my spine.

    Also try Rebecca Pidgeon's "The Raven." Spellbinding.

    There's also a wonderful vocal jazz compilation 2-cd set I recently picked up called, "Hear and Now." It features a lot of the sultry lounge style music you describe.

    Hey, thanks...

    A friend did get me into Gillian Welch, but she is identified as Americana....she looks like she has never been out of town let alone into a lounge.

    I listened to Diana Krall a few years ago on some $2000 PSB speakers, and it was amazing...but a little too jazzy for....

    I do really like Loreena McKennitt, but that is fairly rowdy at times, and although I kind of sort of like Sarah McLachlin, I am embarrassed to admit it.

    I was wtaching the beginning of Dark City the other night and Jennifer Connelly's opening scene is as a female crooner...she's probably not singing, but who knows...she has other assets...

    keep them coming...and check out that Gotan Project stuff...Lunatico has some amazing SQ and deep bass....

    p.s. my brother-in-law got me listening to Pandora and it is neat how it constructs a playlist absed upon a band you enter.

    No need, if you ask me, to be embarrassed to admit to like Sarah McLachlan. I like much of her stuff, too, and most of it is sumptuously recorded.

    This may be a little old-fashioned for you (it's that ambient, Enya kind of stuff), but the OP might like cellist/vocalist Caroline Lavelle's 1995 album Spirit.

    Tossing out a couple more for the Recovering Hard Rock Junkies,

    Portishead (Beth Gibbons is singer) (think Massive Attack light) and Thievery Corporation and Zero Seven....also, Nothing But the Girl (I forgot about them).

    These are more in the so-called chill-out genre...

    Since I know you like chill-out/downtempo electronica, I would also add Brookeville's two discs, and Nostalgia 77''s first two discs. They are legit jazz musician's who do jazzy downtempo stuff, very cool...

    Portishead and Massive Attack came to mind for me as well.

    No vocals, but Ratatat and Bonobo are more good "evening chill electronica music" for me.

    And screw being ashamed of liking something; I adjust my musical tastes for NO ONE! I like everything from classical to rap to hard @ss metal to a few popular songs as well.

    A lot of the waveform stuff is very good....they have a station on Live365 called starstreams...this very old FM dj guy called Forrest does the programming...maybe someone knows him!

    there is also one on Live365 called chillout2ny (or newyork)....I've picked up a number of cool groups off from those stations...

    have you looked at ricky lee jones? Her first few lps were amazing. She ranges from jazzy to blues

    Also check out october project the first cd only. The one with burry my lovely. I'm not sure really how to describe that cd.

    Celine Deon has some very good quality recordings and her voice is one of the most amazing and controlled I've ever heard. Some of my favorite songs from her aren't on the radio. Great stuff to just sit back, and listen. Used to flip back and forth from her to Metallica, so know exactly what you're talking about. :biggrin:
