I just finished "Flyboys" by James Bradley for the second time. I guess the first go around was about two years ago. He's the guy that wrote "Flags of Our Fathers". He gets it right.
A couple recent sessions with "A Classic Case - The London Symphony Orchestra Plays the Music of Jethro Tull" and "The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix" reminded me just how much I liked these two. Tull guest stars with Martin Barre and maybe Clive Bunker (I have to read the liner notes again). These symphonic type translations usually suck big time, this one doesn't.
The Gil Evans lp is from the mid 70's. I had the lp back then and it was pretty one dimensional sounding but the music was there. The cd sounds just as good I guess, and it is Bluebird 8409-2-RB. Peter Erskine on drums.
The LSO is an RCA Victor CD, 09026-62510-2

Excellent reads! Both Bradley books you mentioned are sitting on my dresser right now, for some odd reason. Perhaps I will read them again, too.

"The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix"; never heard of it but another interesting recommendation.
Examples are available on youtube; sound is poor, to be sure, but even over the internet, Gil Evans Orchestra performing "Angel" sounds .....

Knew nothing of Gil Evans before  but, from reading, a very interesting person. Worked with a lot of interesting people. A LOT of interesting people. Learn something new everyday.
....not muddying up the thread ,but Gil Evans and Miles Davis from 1959:

I still haven't warmed up to that Gil Evans album yet, despite owning it for a few years.Wristwatch--->Crisco
