I am thinking of trying a CD/DVD cleaner, restorer. There are a ton of them out there, and I was wondering if anyone here has tried them. From time to time I pick up used CD's, and they are not always in the greatest shape. The same goes for DVD's. They claim to be able to repair damage and clean them to be usable again. Any input would be helpfull.

Thanks, Maurice

    Thanks,
Have you tried any of the machines? Are they safe for the discs?

I have one of the older hand operated machines, never seemed to work as well as polishing by hand with this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-Clear-Plastic-Polish-Bottle/dp/B0009KNOSQ

Works great for removing small scratches. For bigger scratches I use some old Eagle One jewlers rouge, followed by the #10 Meguires polish.

Thank you for your input. If I cant find some good feed back on one or more of the machine's I will try one of the above methods.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but here is what I use:

    http://www.amazon.com/Aleratec-DVD-Disc-Repair-Plus/dp/B0002A9SJ2

It's an Aleratec DVD/CD Disc Repair Plus. Probably one of the cheaper ones out on the market (coming from my dad, it's gotta be cheap). It's motorized, comes with 3 "scrubbers", using 2 at a time. Cleaning solution, and the polishing or repair pad. Works great, nice and automatic, and looks like it can be had for $30

(I've repaired some pretty bad discs - like the kinds from back when I was 16 and had these things just sliding around on my floor in the backseat)

    Thanks Glowrdr,

I looked that one up online and it seems to get good revue's. There are also model's from Memorex, Allsop, and dynex, if anyone has any experience with those. Why would you get flamed for this recomendation? Are these things supposed to be bad? I now have an issue with a dvd set that I got for Christmas. (the Third Watch tv series, I love that show) It is brand new, but every disc so far gets to a certain point and freezes. They also take 2 or 3 tries to load. The company my Wife purchased them from is not much of a help. So any idea's are appreciated.

I would say in a situation like that, a cleaner probably isn't going to work. I'm not sure if professional DVD's are anything like PC ones, but I do know sometimes you just get one brand of disc that doesn't like to play nice with another brand of burner/players.

I'd be leaning more towards a defect in a run of DVD's. Depending on where you got them from, I would look into exchanging them. Even if you bought them online - you could always look into bring them to your local big box store and exchange for the same thing (even if open, as long as it's the same title). This is kind of a roundabout way of doing it, but if you can't work with the original company - it will get you the same results.
