explain Neo:6

Could somebody explain Neo:6?
Does it take a DD or DTS 5.1 signal and matrix the 6'th channel, leaving the original 5.1 signal intact? Or, does it do something different, such as recreate all 3 surround channels.
Also, does anyone with Neo:6 capability watch 5.1 material in straight 5.1, or do you utilize Neo:6?
Or, I am completely missing the point of Neo:6? I understand it will take an analoge 2 channel signal (CD, TV broadcast) and create a 6 channel, matrixed mix. Can it even be used with a DD or DTS 5.1 signal?
I am confused. Please help.

It is explained in the manual. But I can't remember exactly. It doesn't have to do with DVD movies- you will get a matrixed sound from the 6th channel on anyway.
Here is a little something for ya:
DTS NEO:6 -
My understanding is that you would really only need Neo6 (or PLII) for 2 channel sources, as you mentioned. To me, PLII sounds better than Neo6 for 2 channel sources such as tv or directv. I have always used DD or DTS when using a 5.1 or 6.1 source. I only have one 6.1 movie (Gladiator), and I use DTS-ES discrete for it. I utilize the back surround in 5.1 sources by using Dolby Digital EX, or DTS-ES matrix, according to which format the movie is encoded. For CDs, I use direct (2 channel), or sometimes 6 channel stereo. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.
I think I figured it out. PLII & Neo:6 are indeed for 2 channel, analoge sources. On my Onkyo, I can't even turn on PLII or Neo:6 when a 5.1 DVD is the source.
My confusion came from the fact that I didn't realize that I could turn on DD-EX & DTS-ES when the DVD is only 5.1. Since I have I 6.1 receiver & speaker setup, I just wanted to make sure that I could utilize 6.1 capability when watching a 5.1 DVD.
My Onkyo has "Auto, On & Off" for DD-EX & DTS-ES. I'm assuming that if I'm watching a 5.1 DVD, and set the EX/ES mode to "ON", I'll get the 6.1 setup, even if it is matrixed. Does this sound correct?Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -

Not alwasys. The disc needs to be flagged with the ES/EX flag and not all of them are. This subject was been covered quite a bit at HTF. Click here to go to the HTF-Primer on 6.1 systems. You can also click here for a list of ES/EX encoded movies.
Hope this helps. -
YES, Morris that is correct. Set to ON you will get a MATRIXED 6/7 channel on all DVD's. The more active the surrounds are - the more the 6/7 channel gives you a discret feel. Especially with good time delayes. (distance settings) My Onkyo will SAY Matrixed 6.1 or ES/EX. Enjoy!!!!!!!:cool:Originally posted by gmorris

PS: People in 6/7 channel denile do not understand this consept yet but it is catching on. They want to think they are limited ONLY to the software. And with ALL the DSP's you are ALWAYS rocking your extra channels no matter what source you are using (if you choose to do so). I have been rocking 6/7 channel ALL STEREO for music and have never looked back. -
Thanks scottvamp,
I thought that was how it worked.
Just to clarify, if a DVD is "flagged" with the EX/ES signal, setting to "Auto" or "On" will turn the 6'th channel on. If there is no "flag" the only way to get the 6'th channel on is to set the rec. to "On". Right? Setting to "auto" will not turn it on.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
In a nutshell....Yes.

I don't have those specific settings on my reciever. But either it flags it or doesn't and everything else you can simply put your ear by the speakers to hear if it is working. Learing your reciever and playing around with different setting is what this hobbie is all about. Every reciever is a bit different from the next. Have Fun!!

I keep my Denon 1804 on auto decode and the 6th speaker setting "on". Most of my movies are DD 5.1, but the receiver goes to DD ex matrix. My receiver seems to use the best decoding possible when using auto. Yours may be the same.
