Currently I have a pioneer 1018 and will most likely be getting a set of rtia5s for my fronts. I really dont understand on how to pick a good amp. I believe the pioneer receiver I have is rated at 110wpc. So if I want to get better performance out of my speakers then does that mean that I need to be looking at amplifiers that put out more than 110 wpc in order to get an increase in the speaker performance that I am getting with my receiver? Thanks for helping the uninformed.

What is your budget?

not really sure what they go for but I would say something lower than 400 dollars. I got the pioneer 1018 last year from audiogon for 300 so if I had to go the used route for a good amp then I would do that.

Where are you located as I'm sure we can help you find something good on your local Craigslist if you want to go that route.

Haverstraw, NY. Rockland County which is about 35 miles from nyc. If you could, some guidance on my eariler questions would be helpful as well. Thanks. I love this forum

110 watts from a good quality dedicated amp will very likely sound much better than 110 watts from a multi channel receiver. Even a Pioneer. You could get a nice used Adcom, Nad, Carver for under $400 that would make your speakers sing. Even a good used older integrated. I had a Kenwood KA9100 that was only rated at 95 watts but it made my RTiA7's totally come to life. I had been using a Pionneer Elit VSX-52Txi previously. Try not to give too much weight to wattage and more to quality and you will find great pleasure.

There's a place in Maple Shade NJ. called The Album Hunter. That's on South New Jersey Craigslist. I'm sure he can help you. I live in Bergen County, NJ. and it was 1 hour and 40 mins for me. You're about 20 mins farther north.

..hate to say it twice in a day (sound like a fan-boy) but used Parasound HCA-1500's are selling far below their performance level. (205 watts @8ohms). There's also some great used amps in the FM in your price range...Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Source: Rotel CD14MkII CD Player - Speakers: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

You won't find a nicer amp for around $400. No affiliation

From ebay I see a Carver PM 600 going for about 50 dollars and a Adcom GFA 5400 for about the same, at least for now. The Carver is listed at 300w into 4 ohms and 200 watts into 8 ohms and the Adcom is 200 w into 4 and 125 into 8. Do these fit the bill of something decent that I could use for awhile?

Your really rolling the dice on a 50 buck amp off of ebay dude. Your pioneer is well capable of running those speaks all on it's own. However, if you feel the need to amp them up, lower your risk and buy from a club member here,or on Audiogon. Plenty of good quality amps for any need comes up in our FS section.HT SYSTEM-
