Great CD player in great shape. Also makes a great transport with the Philips CD Pro transport mechanism. Some light scratches on plastic lid typical of piano back finish.

Also posted on Audiogon at higher price.

    Wow, I've been watching these, but just spent those dollars modding my VTL amp or it would be mine! CD Player upgrade is next in line, but it's going to be into next year before funds are accumulated.

    I don't know if you saw the whole story, but I just got my VTL ST-50 tube amp back from being modded. It developed a power problem, and knowing I had to pay shipping and bench time anyway, I decided to have it fully modded (caps, diodes, silver wire, Cardas, etc.). Before sending it in, I had just added 4 new Jim McShane power tubes PLUS 4 of the Holy Grail Telefunken ECC801S's, so I was in deep. Last week I bought a vintage Conrad-Johnson Sonographe SD-22 CDP for a song, so I really thought I was done for a while.

    Then you just had to list this :biggrin:. The A1 has been on my wish list for a long time, and I figured I'd better not pass it up or I would be kicking myself, even though the timing was off a bit.

    This was supposed to be March/April thing, so I've got a bit of esplainin' to do :smile:

    Exactly. But in fairness to the joke, this purchase on top of what's gone down audio-wise in the past 2 weeks does allow me to understand how coke addicts raid the rent money and the kids tuition funds :biggrin:

    Yeah, you knew I couldn't keep it to 4 words.

    This may be a reference player, but it is so obscure that no one will ever know it.

    I did hear a skip or two early in my listening session when there may have been a little condensation after only being off ot the 30 degree UPS for an hour, or it may have been a bad CD. I decided to clean the lens, and it truly got even better. I'll say it again . . . . Stellar.

    NOTE: For years I have thought annhydrous alcohol was OK to clean a CD lens, and I've never had a problem, but before cleaning the expensive Phillips CD Pro2 transport, I searched online for guidance and found . . .

    Page 8 says in part . . .

    " it is advised to make the surface of the lens clean by blowing clean air over it in order to avoid that little particles make scratches on the lens. Because the lens is made of synthetic material coated with a special anti-reflectivity layer, the cleaning must be done with a non-aggressive cleaning fluid. We advise to use the following lens cleaner which
    is available in a normal photo shop. Advised lens cleaner: “KODAK LENS CLEANER CAT 176 71 36”


    Amazingly, I had that exact part number in my 35mm lens cleaning kit and it certainly did the trick.

    I listened for at least 5 hours after cleaning last night and for several hours already this morning. No Worries. The cleaning put this back to brand new!

    The other issue could have been that I had it temporarily stacked on top of 3 other components I'm testing that are separated by Vibrapods. I think it may have been swaying a bit to the bass when I was pushing the top end of the db range. I tucked it in where it belongs after the lens cleaning. Even with the new caps in my amp that won't be fully cooked for a least another week, I can tell you would be hard pressed to find a better sounding CDP.

    My excellent condition/excellent sounding Conrad-Johnson Sonograph SD-22 CDP with Remote and good condition/excellent sounding Technics SL-PG100 will be showing up soon here or on the 'Bay. The Sonographe is great as would be expected, but the Technics is a real sleeper and a nice surprise in it's price range.
