Hi Folks

I was going to help a friend of mine look for a tv. I much prefer plasmas. I was at work and a co worker overheard me and he opined that plasmas are less reliable and that he has a Panasonic olasma that is starting to fade after 2 years.
From what I have heard, plasmas no longer have the issues they did years ago. I bought a 50 inch 720p Samsung plasma for someone earlier this year and I seem to remember that it was rated to last a great many hours....much longer than 2 years. (like maybe you'd have to watch 12 hours a day for 30 years to approach that number of hours or something.)

Anyway, I don't have my set on that much, and have had it less than a year.

My question: Does anyone here who has a plasma, uses it alot and has had it for a number of years have any complaints?

Panasonic had an issue where the black levels got worse over time. I believe Home Theater found the latest Panasonics were much better in this area. Do a Google seach on "Panasonic plasma black levels".

In my opinion Pioneer plasma televisions are the best I have ever seen, blackest blacks and excellent colors. Visitors to my house always compliment on the image quality. My 2cents.

My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

    Thanks for the input everyone.

I suspected that it might be a problem with this fellows particular set rather than a problem with plasmas. I am more confident in recommending plasma to my friend now.

Plasmas are outstanding. Depending on his budget Samsung has a 50" 3d 720p Plasma on sale for around $800.

    Thanks Leroy

I bought my buddy a 50 inch 720p Samsung earlier this year. It was an exchange...buy him a set in exchange for a couple of months of rent. Being that rent in SoCal for a room is at least $600 to $800 per month, it worked out great for both of us. (He has no clue and no interest in shopping for electronics deals).

He is happy as a clam with the tv I bought him.

I'll ask this friend if she wants 3d or not, but yes...some nice deals out there.

    I have two Panny Plasma's.

42" in the Bedroom that I have had going on 8 years now and it still works and looks great

50" In the living room that I have had for 2 years and the PQ is great. Deep blacks, awesome color etc.

Panny and Samsung both make some really nice Plasma's.

Pioneer does make the best Plasma but they are double the price of other Plasmas so they should be the best.

I've had a pioneer plasma going on 2 yrs now. Still has inky blacks and a great picture. Power board failed the week after I got it. But since it was on clearance price from a local boutique shop, a quick swap of the board solved the problem.

Just don't go crazy looking for a pioneer. The reason it was on sale was because Pioneer stopped manufacturing its plasma line and left the market.

Pannys are supposed to be the next best thing to Pioneers. But if the Pannys do have a problem with black levels greying over time, it sort of defeats one of the major reasons to get one. Do your research and make sure the model does not suffer from this problem before purchasing.
