5.1 vs. 7.1

I'm building a system with Polk RM8 speakers, and was wondering whether it would be a huge difference in sound if I added two back surrounds.
I've heard that in a smaller room, 5.1 is actually a better set-up. Is this true ?

Any thoughts ?

Yes, if you have a smaller room and can't give the rear surrounds enough space behind your seating, stick to properly placed 5.1.
