Welcome to Club Polk.
The new Pioneer VSX-1120K for under $480 shipped is hard to beat.
It has preamp outputs to allow you to connect an external amp.
It has HDMI 1.4 for 3D compatibility, Internet radio and great iPod connectivity.

I got one one these as a gift for my daughter. It makes a nice Christmas present.
would you happen to know if the usb connection works with most music player's & if the sound qaulity is any good -
I personally haven't tried it, bit I have no reason to expect that it wouldn't.
Great sound quality is a hallmark of Pioneer.
I'm not talking about the sound qaulity of the actual reciever I was referring to the usb connection & if connecting a music player would sound as good as a cd player via toslink didn't really make myself clear
