Found a guy selling one of these for $60: http://audio-database.com/PIONEER-EXCLUSIVE/amp/a-717-e.html

Looking for an amp for my son's VA Haydn Grands. I'm unsure of the condition of this amp. Worth looking into?

Hmm. I guess I've got to buy it now. He's also selling a pair of speakers (that I don't need) for $100. Perhaps I'll make his day and buy it all. :)

All I have to do is pick it up now. :) (I think I should be happy.) He says it hasn't been used in 6 years, which for some mechanical things isn't always good. What about amps? Anything I should be wary of?

I think for $60 you can't be too wary period. If it works I would think it would be well worth that coin. Although I didnt check completed listings but that one I linked above, bids were what around $500??

I have a old Pioneer A7 integrated that had not been used in at least 12 years. Hooked it up in the garage the other day and it was good to go.

Oh, I don't mean wary as far as if it's worth it or not - I'm definitely buying it. Just wondering if I should expect any particular issues, i.e. corrosion, parts going bad, etc...

As long as it wasn't sitting in a harsh (humid/wet/excessive heat) environment, the amp should not be any worse for the wear after sitting for 5-6 years. Some folks might say that it will take some time for some of the caps to reform though. You might hear some abnormal hum or buzz at first. Just don't push it. For $60, that is definitely a no-brainer. It is a fine example of the mid/late-80s quality wars.

Picked it up this afternoon. Seller was the original owner. I had read that this was a model sold in Japan (US model had the Elite name added, but same specs). Sure enough, the seller was a Navy guy who bought it in Okinawa in 1988. Still had the original box and manual. Overall, it seems to be in very good condition - just some normal aging issues, I think. I plugged it in and all lights came on, transformer clicked, etc... Will try some speakers later, but I'm expecting it to work. It needs a bit of a cleaning, too. Mostly dust, but also some corrosion on the speaker and RCA terminals. What's the best method for removing slight oxidation?

Btw, if all goes well, I plan to try this with the Monitor 11s.

Never used it on audio gear. But I have had great results removing light oxidation on guitar machine heads, Floyd Rose temolo's etc with Brasso or jewelers polish. And a dremel with polishing wheels.

I'd love to get my ears on some 11's or 12's someday.

I use Flitz either on q-tips or a Dremel wheel with good results. If you use a Dremel be sure to put some rags around the work area, it will spin some excess stuff around. It's faster with the wheel, but q-tips require less cleanup.
Then a soft cloth buffing and they look better than new, then wipe everything off with Caig.
    Good luck.
