Hi guys, I once before answered a post on the shutting down of a Yamaha
rx-v665. My reply was to tell the guy what the techs told me. At a certain frequency the amp auto shuts down mid program. Annoying yes but maybe a just reason. Now it's happened to me and it's beyond annoying and down right
defective.Yamaha has a volume scale that goes from-65 to +18 being the loudest. I'm telling you I have NEVER EVER reached any peak vol level and now I really don't know what to do. Talking to some other makers they also have auto cut-offs, and I understand why but not at the levels I was running at. Could anyone please help w/ this very annoying problem.I knew there was a reason I went back 2-channel

As you have a powered sub I would suggest raising the crossover freq. And I would also set the front speakers to small since they are.

    See if that helps.

If it's defective, have it serviced.

I have had receivers that clipped at -10db...the volume knob is simply a gain valve and not a power knob...and every manufacture uses a different scale of gain. It is not reflective to power output meaning you can clip the amp at much lower then 0db or in your case +18db

The old 65' series certainly wasn't their greatest effort. The new Adventage line is some of the best stuff I've seen. Best in class video processing on some models and symmetrical power design at some very low price points.

Some of the Yamaha AVRs have a Max Volume Setting.

My V1800 does which allows the user to adjust the max volume in 5db increments with a control range of -30dB to +15dB.

Your AVR may be set up to some sort of default that is below your urges to go "stupid loud" :D

If you can change the setting - go to the max.

If your avr doesn't have this feature and it is cutting out - well, could be defective, or maybe its smarter than you think;)

Yamaha ain't what they used to be...
Remember when Sony was quality gear???
Last time I was shopping, I would have had to buy the Sony ES/Esprit (and it was hard to find--as if they were discontinuing that line!) to get the build quality of the older "plain ol'" Sony stuff.

I USED to have respect for Yamaha and Sony. No more. Friggin' junk, and mostly sourced from the Communists.

That is a tad strong... The Yamaha RX-z lines are very good quality, among the best in fact. It used to be that pretty much anything they put th eYamaha name on, they took some pride in and that is not so with most companies these days.

My heart is with two channel gear now, no thanks to this place.:p;):)

    What?
Now it's happened to me and it's beyond annoying and down right defective.Yamaha has a volume scale that goes from-65 to +18 being the loudest. I'm telling you I have NEVER EVER reached any peak vol level and now I really don't know what to do.
    Huh?
Talking to some other makers they also have auto cut-offs, and I understand why but not at the levels I was running at.
    You talked to the makers?

I'm sorry, but I think you've failed to adequately describe your problem. Apparently you're experiencing some sort of sudden shut down (auto-protect mode, maybe?) Tell us what happened just before the shut down, where your volume was set, what you were playing, etc... Was there any message displayed? It could be a number of things. I once had a very hard-to-find short in a speaker wire and it just about drove me crazy. It would play back normal and then suddenly shut down. I was positive it was the AVR - thought it was overheating, overstressed, or something of that sort. Started disconnecting speakers one at a time, switching them around... finally figured it out. You can't rule out anything or automatically just assume it's the AVR. Good luck, and keep troubleshooting. :)

There is absolutely NO REASON why that AVR can't drive a set of 5 satellite speakers!!
