Benefits of Multi-Channel inputs......

Just a quick question. I have an Outlaw 950 pre that I have been using with my B&K AV5000 amp. I recently bought a B&K AVR-202 that has replaced the outlaw. When I was unhooking it, I noticed that the outlaw has the multi-channel imputs and realized that I have no idea what they are for. What is their purpose. I have the sony 1000ES that has the multi-channel outputs so was wondering, is this a better way to set-up your DVD or other components. If so, why? If not, why? Just looking to learn more about this feature. Thanks in advance.

Using the multi-channel inputs let's your source do any decoding that happens. If the source (DVD/CD?) has better DACs, that's the way to go. It gives you options.TNRabbit

Thanks, guys. So here is my question. I have a ps3 with no multi cahnnel and the sony 1000ES with multi channel. Would it be better to use the 1000es hooked up via multichannel to my pre? If I am reading correctly, that would then allow me to get the newest audio formats from the dvd player. Am i correct?

Thanks again, Rick. One last question........I have the B&K AVR with no multichannel. The outlaw 950 does. What do you think would sound better - the B&K without the multichannel or the outlaw with the multi channel to the dvd player? Do the new audio formats really make that much of a noticable difference? I really like the B&K, but if the outlaw is more "feature friendly" maybe I should relegate it to bedroom duty.Shawn

the real question here is which device has a better decoder. you really have to test it yourself to find out. Sony ES should be very good

back in the olden days before fiber optic cables and digital coax cables.. to get multi channel 5.1 audio from your DVD player to your receiver.. we used multi channel inputs.
six analog RCA cables were used.. things have changed. and most receivers/processors still have those inputs, but are not 7.1 mostly.
The 6 inputs were also used later on for DVD-Audio and SACD multi channel audio formats.
as some one said, now are mostly used for carrying the signal from a blu ray player to your receiver so you can hear the high def audio tracks. if you don't have HDMIPolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Thanks for all the replies.
Yes, I have it connected to my television via HDMI for display purposes. It is connected via optical cable for sound. I guess I will try swapping out the B&K for the Outlaw and the PS3 for 1000es and see what it sounds like. It will be shootout; whichever set-up wins, I keep. Whichever doesn't oes to the bedroom or to my brother.

OK, first off I want to thank mantis, Rick and everyone else for helping me out and answering my questions. Long story short, I ended up going back to the outlaw and relegating the ps3 to bedroom duty. Right now my HT consists of the Outlaw 950, B&K AV5000 amp, my samsung tv and the Sony BDP-1000es. I finally figured out what the multi-channel inputs are used for (thanks to the forum). I have the 1000es hooked up to the outlaw via multichannel and all I can say is WOW!!!! I popped in Avatar tonight after I got finished reconnecting everything and it was stunning.
So now I have the B&K avr-202, RT55's, a cs400, and RT35's to go with the ps3 for my bedroom/secondary setup. Now all I need is a subwoofer!!!!!
Thanks again all,
ShawnShawn

One thing I have noticed is that in order to get multichannel sound from the dvd player, I have to push the 6 channel button on the outlaw remote every time I turn it on. I don't know if there is a way to save this setting as default so I don't have to do that everytime. If I choose not to use the bypass, it is connected through optical cables, but I do not get dolby digital / dts sound. The display says it is playing at PL-II, but the preamp is set to default to DTS/Dolby Digital. Anyone know if there is a way to fix this and the other issue?
Thanks in advance,
ShawnShawn
