Curiosity....
Has anyone ever heard of Sherwood Newcastle? Its another division of Sherwood. I was curious if anyone had experience with Sherwood today or Sherwood-Newcastle, or even this model.

It's a 7 channel amplifier, 100 watts per channel, 8 ohms. A hi-end store in LA Ca. was selling this for 799.00

I didn't know Sherwood was still around....

Thank you,
munk

They're a low-end brand from what I can gather. They still make a few cheap stereo receivers but they're cheap on putting in heatsinks. I don't know about their multi-channel stuff. I'd guess that the model you're looking at is an entry-level model. Was that an AVR or just a poweramp?

actually, the newcastle is Sherwood's flagship brand.. though being as entry level as sherwood is, i'm willing to bet Sony ES is probably still better than Newcastle, but i could be wrong. as I don't own either and am just going off of hearsay.

I recall Sherwood being a giant when I was young. The tech sheet at the company's web page was stressing how there were actually 7 discreet amplifier modules built as monobloks-discreet amplifier stage for all channels. 2 toroidal power transformers....

Lists for 1600.00 and Evolution Audio and Visual - Agoura Hills Ca.- has it for 800.00

But if no-one's heard it I can't trust simply tech sheets.

I'm pretty sure someone here owns that model. Some of the older Newcastle stuff is reasonably well built. Sure their lower end models are entry and not much to talk about.

The proof is in the 'listening', though?? If it's local....get your ears on it!

2000 miles away- but the store there sells good stuff.

I'm impressed by the level of knowledge in this forum. It's going to take me a long time to learn half as much.

Actually that is an exceptional amp for that price, as long as it is fully functional. It is of a similar quality to Outlaw, Integra or Emotiva.

Sonically it would (IMO) outclass most in its price range.

I believe it is a discontinued model thus the lower price. It was a new model 5 or so years ago (or more)

I probably placed 6-8 of them and all happy owners.

Sherwood's parent company, Korea's Inkel, is one of the world's biggest OEM for home audio components. Inkel has owned Sherwood since the mid 80s. They made amps/receivers for the likes of Denon, Outlaw Audio, Atlantic Technology, Boston Acoustics, etc. Sherwood's own components are quite good as well. The problem is that Sherwood don't advertise much and its components don't get review much. My $60.00 Sherwood 4109 stereo receiver (purchased new from Radio Shack 2 years ago on Black Friday) was easily one of the best audio bargains I ever picked up.

Sherwood's Newcastle line is nice stuff, definately not BOTL. I used to own their 980 pre/pro a few years back. I've had a couple others since then, & it is still one of the better sounding processors I've had in my rig. If the amp's specs meet your needs, I would jump on it.

That is all good news, and I would be supporting Korea rather than China which is a bonus.

Sherwood Newcastle is a nice line. Not many people know about it but they get good reviews in magazines. Their new flagship receiver is the first receiver that uses trinnov or something of that nature. Its the room correction software that major studios use. I actually own the A965. Its huge at 90lbs, two tordial transformers, and a great sounding amp. Its not bottom of the barrel. Do a search you will find great reviews of the newcastle line.

On a side-note with the 4109, which I own. It's a noisy amp--it has a nasty hiss but the hiss isn't apparent except if you used it for near-field monitors. The transformer inside is huge and makes up most of the receiver's weight.

I told you someone OWNED this model! And it sounds like a winner! I remember reading rdb2001's posts on this--now.

    Sherwood Newcastle

Oh yeah! I went to school with him. You wouldn't want him on your team during gym class, but he a real math whiz.
