Optical mouse and video card (AGP 8X?) on the cheap

Putting together a crap old desktop to act as a print/file server.. need an optical mouse (wired or wireless, doesn't matter.. but black if possible) and a vid card.

The one I have in there now (GeForce FX 5200) puts out a shaky image at any resolution. It's either the card of the 8x AGP slot but I only have the one card here to test that. Only other slots on the mobo are PCI (no PCI express).

My only requirement is running a smooth 1280x1024 @ 32-bit.

If anybody has some old parts lying around they're not using, I'd be grateful.

Oops. Dangit. I did it again. Forgot about the special "WANTED" section. Mods, you can move this post there if needed.

Ah, right on. Let me know what you've got.

    I just hope it's not the slot/mobo.

i suggest that you search ebay for "dell G0770" which is a part number for a dell 64mb nvidia geforce4 mx440 8x agp card that is sold with buy-it-now for under $8 delivered. it is a better card than the popular fx5200 that is notorious for failing exactly as you described. the only downside to the mx440 is that is only has a dvi port and if you need a vga port you will also have to get a dvi to vga adapter.

Oh, interesting. Didn't know the 5200 was such a clunker. Yeah, just VGA on the monitor I have.

it is a good card, extremely popular in its day and a great performer, but many die demonstrating the symptoms that yours has. another positive about the mx440 is that it is passively cooled, meaning it does not have a fan, so it is quiet. good luck whatever you do.
