i wanted to know if you have an amp hooked up to an AVR, can you power a set of speakers off of the amp and the AVR at the same time? i mean off of the same channel. i have the pre outs from my AVR hooked up to the amp powering speaker set #1 and wanted to run speaker set #2 off of the AVR front out puts. can i do this or is this just stupid?

I think I get what you're asking, but just to clarify...
You have speaker set #1 being powered by the amp (which is using your front preouts), right?
You also want to use your front speaker channels on your AVR to run the second set of speakers, right?
Is this correct?
I've never seen this configuration, so I really don't know if it'll work -- you'd essentially be running two sets of speakers from one set of channels using two separate power sources.
From my small database of knowledge, you can run your front speakers through the amp via preout from the AVR. Surrounds can be powered by the AVR through the surround channels.
I'm sure more experienced members will chime in once you clarify.

Yes you can.I used to run the upper range on my 12's with the avr and the lower range with the pre outs and the external amp.Parasound Avc-1800

Same - that's how I run my A7s. The Denon runs the mids / highs and the amp runs the woofers. Oddly, the Denon manual (and my Yamaha's manual) both say not to connect speakers to both the pre-outs and the Front speaker terminals at the same time. So I turn on the bi-amp function and connected the speakers to the rear surround (bi-amp) terminals.
However, I've tried it w/ the front speaker terminals and the pre-outs and it works too. Not sure why the manufacturers don't want us to do it.Dali Optikon 1Mk2

IMHO most AVRs have this as a selectable option (one or the other) so it should be difficult to use both at once. The possible reason is by internal splitting of the signal, the signal might be to low and the end result could be noise introduced at the output?anyone else have input on this?DARE TO SOAR:

In most avr's, you can't use both the pre-outs and speaker connections for the same channel. Don't know if that goes for the higher end AVR'S though. Me personally, I wouldn't do it. Can't you just run the other set off of zone 2 ? Or are you trying to get everything off the fronts ? If so, why do you want 2 sets of totally different speakers as the fronts? Just curious is all. That will create one funky sound for sure.:)HT SYSTEM-
