Hello everyone,

Been reading these forums for a few weeks now as I finally finished my movie room and I've been putting my 100" projector to good use. For years I've had a crap speaker system and since finishing the movie room I needed an upgrade.

I just purchased -

CS2
monitor 70's
monitor 30's - rears
psw 505
onkyo 260

The room is 18x15.

Is this a good speaker setup for movie/sports watching?

Additionally, any recommendations as far as setup? speaker placement? Break in?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to Club Polk Dustbowl :)

You definitely can't go wrong with the monitor series to start your audio and HT journey. I am not familiar with this model of Onkio receiver but I am sure someone will chime and comment. How do you find your 505 for HT duty? Have you done any room threathment yet? Small little tweeks, room threathment and proper placement of your speakers are very innexpensive but go a long way. Which PJ are you using?

    Cheers!

    Thanks for the reply!

I have no idea what room threathment is? sorry for my ignorance.

I actually haven't gotten the sub yet. I ordered it today from the price drop on newegg. Hopefully it performs to my liking.

I have the benq w1000 1080p projector and 100" elite screen.

The receiver is the onkyo rc-260.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

    Hmm,

after reading lots more (which may or may not be a good idea).

Maybe I wasted my money on the psw505?

Is there a better sub for around $225? mainly movies/sports no music.

At the present price point it is far from a waste of money. The 505 is well regarded by some on here however, I have noticed the 505 is a better performer when used for music then HT however, some are quite content with them while using them in both music and HT purpose. The 505 is a vintage sub and may not fullfill the entire spectrum of today's requirement but that is only my opinion. You might get better performance with the DSW series, SVS or Epik but the cost difference is quite significant so it is all a matter of budget

10 years ago I had a $1000 Velodyne F1200. I feel my PSW505 does every bit of the job the Velodyne did. I guess theer is always better but with these selling for $250 I would not consider it a waste. I like mine for HT and music.

In fact if newegg is at $225 I think psw505 #2 will be on my doorstep shortly.

I love my psw505 for movies, and it does pretty good for most music (at least to MY ears) you should be very happy with that setup! I can tell you i'm more than happy with my m60's and cs1, so i'm sure you'll be happy with m70's and a cs2. I really was also impressed with the 30's for rears, definitely more sound than i was expecting for that price. Let us know what you think once it's all set up.

+1 for the 505. Unless you have the money to blow, for the price (especially at $225 shipped), it's a no-brainer. I don't personally own it, but know many people who do and are more than happy with their purchase (and paid a bit more as well). Plus at that low price point, getting a second 505 isn't exactly thinking "over the moon".

As far as what you have going on so far; I'm sure you will be very satisfied! Especially once your PSW comes into play. I have a very similar setup with the differences being a Onkyo 608 AVR, and Monitor 40 rears. I am using a hand-me-down Klipsch Synergy-12 subwoofer and have not been disappointed.

    Enjoy,
    Brandon

I had the Monitor 70's and cs2 with the Monitor 40's for surround for about 4 years. I started out with a pretty entry level reciever powering everything and it sounded decent but there was room for improvement. I added a Denon 3805 fairly quickly and there was a definite improvement. The 70's can handle alot of power and will sound better the more you throw at them. Not sure about your reciever but I assume it will be the weak point when you start looking for more out of your system. If it has pre-outs for an external amp you will most likely be looking to go that route if you spend much time on this board. lol. I started out on the cheap and have since re-mortgaged lol.

Happy camper with the 505. Jayman, I agree we are always looking to upgrade. Luckily for me being military my budget is small.. Maybe one day I can step up to the plate with the heavy hitters.

New subs made it in. Need to test them both.

What should I do to break them in correctly?
    How should I test?

Here are some pictures of my setup any suggestions with placement?

Just because of my OCD, I would try to center your couch a little better. You can move the end table to another room and get a coffee table instead(more room for your remotes ;) ). A thick rug and some drapes will definitely help with sound absorption.

You also may want to look into a more powerful receiver. I'm a Yamaha fan but a forward receiver probably won't work well for your room. Denon, Harmon Kardon or Marantz make good, warm sounding receivers and may suit your system and room best. Look for preouts so you have the option of adding a separate amp later on.

The Polk PSW505 is a tremendous sub for the money. As enclosed as your room is, you shouldn't have any problems getting it pound. As with any sub, placement is critical. Try different spots to find what works best for you.

As for your speakers, the Monitors are terrific performers for the price, especially for movies. Enjoy!

+1 on centering the couch and adding a rug to reduce the echo in your room. (I should talk) Hardwood floors can be an issue for a Home Theater application. And, have you run Audyssey calibration after hooking up your sub? If you like the 505, have you thought about installing an extra matching sub opposite the existing sub? I noticed that the rc260 has an extra input for one more sub. Nice setup. Is that your cat?

The picture is a little deceiving I suppose. That far right seat (while looking at the screen) is a recliner and its perfectly centered in the room. I could care less about the other seats. The 260 is the same receiver as a sr608 w/o the thx cert. But even my manual is for a 608. hopefully it'll do me for a while b/c I would have to spend a lot more money than I want to upgrade it.

I have a 505 and a pa120 sitting in boxes. I might keep them both.

Also, that's not hardwood, its laminate w/ sound proof padding. Does a pretty good job w/ the sound actually. I already have a coffee table and a rug its just not shown in the pictures.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

no, that's not my cat. Actually that was a 3rd picture of my room. I selected the wrong picture.

I didn't realize that about the Onkyo. With that model number, I assumed it was something from a HTiB. The 608 is a very good receiver. It looks like you've got everything taken care of. Let us know what you think of the subs.
