So I was craiglisting and ran across a 5 channel speaker set with stands for 30 bucks. I have been wanting to replace my crappy HTIB speakers. Well I didn't even really pay attention to the description I just saw a picture that they were larger speakers so they had to be better than 1 3inch driver in each speaker. So I went to pick them up.
They didn't speak a lick of english. No offense to anyone. They were a nice Asian couple that were retiring to Florida and had to get rid of them before they moved. I guess they had no clue the treasure they really had.
I am just judging by ear so you guys will have to tell me how much they are really worth but I got 4 S4 bookshelf speakers and a CS 100. Like I said though judging by ear they are absolutely amazing. I have a knack for being able to pick out details in audio and am a very logical thinker and have always been able to tell even the littlest differences between drivers. I have in fact put on mini local competitions for the campus kids where I judged the SQ of their car audio systems and announced winners and prizes. No more than 50 to 75 people joined but I just thought I would give some background into how much listening experience I had.
I haven't really messed around with polk too much. I never liked the momo line of speakers and most of my experience is in the car audio area. The signature references are of course very nice but that is the only thing i have really listened to extensively from polk.
I could go into detail about the speAkers but with how old they are I am sure there are plenty of reviews out there and that is not what i came here for. I just wanted to of course brag about the deal I got
and let you all know i am hooked on polk home audio!
I'll post some pics of them later. Thanks for readin!

Congrats on a great set BUT Polk has soooooo much waiting for you when you can afford to upgrade if you feel the need. The set you just got is respectable as a beginner set. You should look into the RT series, used, and of coarse Polks new line up of speakers.;)Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Nice find! Those speakers you bought are way better than the HTIB. Like another member said Polk has some very nice HT speaker products at an affordable price.

Wow the single most respectful forum I have ever been to. Thank you all for the warm greeting I will definitely be sticking around.
What would you estimate the value of the whole set would be? -
Woops double post

$35/with stands
-
Lol ok well they are worth much more than that to my ears
-
the S series was for the most part an entry level speaker that goes back several year in the Polk Audio line up. they are not sought after speakers for the most part.. but as long as they sound good to your ears, that's all that matter.
enjoy them..PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

RUUUUUUUUNN! your wallet will thank you if you leave now.:D
Welcome aboard! I will make sure your stay here is full of pain and misery. -
Wow not a bad little set up for $30. My first pair of good speakers were S10's. As mentioned earlier "S" series are not much sought after. The last couple pair on the bay went unsold at $45 and $50. The RT5 and RT35 comparable replacements sell easily for that price or higher. CS100 sell about $30. Stands can be worth that much depending on what they are. The best part is you are now a POLK fan! Thats worth $30!
A nice upgrade would be to buy some RT towers as front mains and use all the S4's for surrounds. There are some RT12's and RT800's listed. I wouldn't pay over 300 shipped. I like RT7's as a book shelf that rivals some towers. Those can be picked up for under $150. Polk also has a host of refurbed towers. there is a ton of options. Enjoy what you have though. You don't necessarily have to do anything. The Vintage Polk section actually says the S4 go down to 32HZ. I am sure the 5 speakers sound awesome. I would have popped the $30 bucks even though I own 8 sets of Polks. The sad thing, even with 8, I am debating if I should call a local guy that has some LS50's for sale. It is a sickness.System:
Samsung LN46C630
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V1
DVD/Blu: Denon 2910/Playstation 3
Front mains: RT16
Front presence: F/X 500i
Center: CS400
Rear surrounds: RT1000p
Rear center: RT7
Subwoofer: PSW505 X 2

so. After a more detailed listen. I think these speakers would be much better with better crossovers. The drivers themselves are pretty darn amazing when i seperate frequencies. Incredible amounts of detail. A lot of times the only thing that distinguishes the lower end speakers of a company and their higher end speakers is cabinet design and crossover design.
So i checked out the schematics. I think imma mod these bad boys. -
Looks like the center is crossed at 6khz 6db and the mids roll off naturally. That about makes me gag lol. I assume the s4's are similar, checking it out now.
-
They look like they are crossed at 6k also, 6db down at the woofer section.
I am not positive on the tweeter section. Looks like 18db, 4k... but it is more complicated than i can figure out in my head lol.
Someone enlighten me on that will ya?
Anyone figure out that circuit for me?
