If you're only experiencing it with your Direct TV box, I'd say check the settings on that.
Sometimes you'll see options like dynamic volume/compression/etc. that will make things sound less dynamic than they normally should be (midnight listening/etc).
However, if the volume goes completely out or isn't consistent...can't tell ya where else to look. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Some of those have had some audio issues in the past. How is it connected to your Denon? (Digital coax, optical, HDMI, etc.)
Next question, does it do this when watching/listening to another source? (cd, dvd, etc.)its the new Direct TV HD/DVR boxes. the front is like a touch screen.
i have everything hooked up to the Denon VIA gold tipped HDMI cables.
so far i think it has only been from watching DTV, also when watching DTV the volume will cutout for a few seconds and then come back.LessisNevermore wrote: »I'm assuming you are running the audio through HDMI, yes?
If you have an optical audio cable around,(if not, pick one up tomorrow) try one of those for the audio. Leave the HDMI in place for the video though. Don't forget to enable the optical out in the menu settings of your DTV receiver. I'm thinking this is likely an HDMI issue. (fingers crossed)
By using the optical for the DTV box, you won't be degrading the sound quality by bypassing the HDMI cable.im only using the HDMIs at this point. ill pick up an optical cable and see if that helps. should i try using another HDMI cable?
BTW
thanks for your time and helpLessisNevermore wrote: »Couldn't hurt.....
You're welcome, hope it works out so you can get on with enjoying your new toys.does this look like the right kind of optical cable

$7 for 15' of it.
so i ordered an digital optical cable from Monoprice. it showed up yesterday. i went to hook it up. now my issue is...i only have an OUT on the back of my TV, OUT on the back of my Direct TV HD/DVR box, and 2 IN and 1 OUT on the back of my AVR. i have the DTV hooked up already to my AVR Via HDMI and then hooked to the TV Via HDMI. but i still get that few seconds where the volume goes dead for a few seconds every so often.
Now my ? is how sound i hook this up so i do have that dead spot in Volume?????
BTW the Optical cable from MonoPrice.com is really nice. its a 15ft cable for $7mole' -
Go directly from your direct tv box into your TV with HDMI and then go optical out from the tv to the receiver.

A friend of mine had a similar problem but with his cable box, with a Denon 2310ci receiver. I believe the problem has to do with certain HDMI inputs on the receiver. I can't remember the exact HDMI input to use I believe it may have be #1 or 2. It has to do with the some compatibility issue, apparently they didn't use the same HDMI inputs for all of the inputs. The good news is that once he switched the input it worked fine.
I'll try to find a link to the forum I found the info on. -

ive been doing some research on the hk receivers, while im waiting on mine to get here..and see several people having the same problem, most of them are using direct tv boxes..if you google audio drop outs with direct tv, you might find something..all the problems seem to relate to hdmi handshaking, also i read if your audio is setup to auto, you can get dropouts when a commercial comes on etc

i can be watching a movie and it will do it. i have tried to pin point when it happens, but its random. i searched it on google and saw all the post about the commercial issues. my issue is different
im gonna call DTV and see what they say.
i have noticed that my DTV HD box in the bedroom does NOT have this issue. box in the front room is a HD DVR box.mole'
