Can you recommend a AVR/Receiver . . .

Hey Guys,

With my recent move back to 2 Channel and Separates, my Pioneer SC-27 is not being fully utilized for its amplification. I'm looking to buy a cheaper receiver with sound quality that is as good or nearly as good as the SC-27, but with only enough power to handle surround duty (maybe a center channel, but I think I like the setup better with the left and right fronts handling the front stage alone.) Essentially, I just need a receiver for video switchng between PS3 and Xbox 360. Support for the HiRez blu-ray formats is a must.

Would the Pioneer Elite VSX-30 fit the bill? I can't find info on its DACS.

Thanks,

Mike

What about onkyo? The 805 is a older unit but better than the newer 806/807/808.

I'm thinking this might be good: Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K. The specs are decent. I just need to keep the woman happy. She's become an audio snob from hanging out with me too long and not can't listen to a crummy old receiver. Consequently, I can't just buy some piece of garbage ;) Anyone got any experience with this unit? I'd like to stay under $400 if I can.

    Is HDMI a must have?

If the SC-27 is paid for, why not just keep that?

Yeah it is paid for. I just thought I could sell it and buy a cheaper replacement while freeing up some "play" money. Unfortunately, I'm thinking the market return may not be worth the effort, especially since I love this frickin' thing. Seriously, the quality and value of this Elite has me liking it as one of my favorite pieces of gear ever . . . and its and AVR!

I thought from the good 'buzz' around the SC-27 was that it had good DACs, and a decent preamp for an AVR.

If you stepped down to a different AVR, wouldn't you be giving up some sound quality?

But, times are tough, if you need to free up some money, by trading 'down' - you do what you gotta do.

Get a Harmon Kardon 2-Channel amp, then a pre-amp, such as a Sunfire. You'll never get the power you need from an AVR.

I personally would say just keep it. The SC line is a great line and I think that even though you may not be using the amp section, the other features as well as that "just in case I need the ice power" is there for back up.

I think the SQ is great for movies for this AVR, and I personally love it. For music it didn't work for me, but thats just me.

If HDMI is not required you could look at an older VSX series elite like the 49TXi or 56TXi. Ive been very happy with mine and they come up used for a good price from time to time.

Here is a link to the specs on my old reciever. Still a respectable piece of gear for its age.

CNET reviews are a good start. When you get it narrowed down to a couple choices ask members that own them for 2nd opinion.

Totally agree. My Elite is now going for $700 less than what I paid a few years ago.

Good choice...that unit is worth keeping and you would 'lose' too much selling it to really replace it with something you liked as much! If I didn't have one of those Onkyo anvils--which I like....I'd get an SC in the blink of an eye...no hesitation!

If I had a "do-over" I would buy a sunfire pre/pro and let my amps do the work...as it is now, the 807 does what is needed
