NAD 545, Cambridge 640C, or Rotel 1072 CDP

I'm impatiently waiting on a Rotel 1072, but I've come across the NAD and the Cambridge for what seem to be good prices. Looking at a few old threads, it seems as though the Cambridge might be a better choice than the NAD with my LSi15's. A Cambridge just listed on a-gon for $250 which seems like a good price.

On a side note, I've e-mailed a guy 4 times about a Rotel on the Chicago craigslist and haven't heard back from him. Even offered him full price with me paying shipping...still no reply. Made a fair offer (IMO) on the Rotel on a-gon, but it was refused.

I've upped the budget a bit since my previous CDP vs DAC thread. $250-350.

Any thoughts appreciated.

If your not getting a response from craigslist i would move on personally. I own a 1072 and it's a nice player but none of that matters if a seller will not respond.

:D Don't really have one. Just looking for opinions about how these three players compare, especially from people who have them. For example, maybe a few people have heard all three players and their advice is to be patient and wait on a Rotel.

Basically I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to dedicated CDP's and after lots of research I've maybe narrowed it down to these three, but I want to make the right decision.

I'm including my sig this time so that you can see the related equipment in my 2-channel rig.

I agree. I last e-mailed on Saturday or Sunday, but I won't be sending another one. Great deal for someone in the Chicago area though.

I've got a Cambridge 640c v2 - nice CDP. Dual Wolfson DACs - great imaging & soundstage. Spacious sound.

Yes. I offered $350 shipping included, but he rejected the offer. Not a lowball offer, but definitely understandable that he turned it down.

I'm very tempted to get the Cambridge 640 for $250. If I didn't like it or just decided that I wanted to try something else, I'd probably be able to get most of my money back.

    Precisely.

If you have the budget and the time/patience - you can try stuff by getting used stuff from audiogon and if it doesn't suit you, move it on, and try something else.

Keep your eyes open for a 640c v2 - I got mine 'new' from Audio Advisor for $369 (well, plus shipping).

These pop up on audiogon from time to time as well.

I've upped my budget to about the max, but your post made me think a little bit. Actually I may be passing it up for less than $50. Thanks Tool. You kind of made me think about the obvious.

Leroy, that's the guy that won't respond to my e-mails. Don't if he's not getting them or if he is just opposed to shipping just isn't letting me know.

    +1, what Larry said.

My experience on audiogon...is one in which I usually try to meet the buyer's price as closely as I can...and this usually means that I, also, wait for a 'good price...then jump on it. So far I haven't been disappointed.

I have the Cambridge 740C which should sound similar to the 640C and I am happy with it. In the past audioadvisor had the 640C at $350 on clearance. That would give you full warranty. Just a thought.
Good luck and don't rush. The hunt for a good deal can be part of the fun.

Went ahead and bought the Rotel I've had my eye on. It's really the player I wanted, I just needed Larry and Tracy to open my eyes. Fact is, I almost passed it up for about $25, not $50.

I checked the audioadvisor website and there doesn't appear to be any more 640C's on clearance. Suppose I should have called, but...I didn't. It would have been new, under warranty, free shipping and less than the Rotel. Would have been a TOUGH decision if there were still any in stock.

Thanks for all the replies. You guys really gave me a lot to think about and your opinions were obviously helpful.

The Rotel arrived today. Perfect condition...truly looks new. But the real test of course is, "How does it sound?" I'm happy to say that I have no regrets. I'm not too good at describing what I hear, but the sound is more open, the highs are...better, and the bass is a tad tighter compared to my PS3. Thanks again to Larry and Tracy for giving me the nudge to go ahead and buy it.
