I'm looking at getting the Onkyo 807 from crutchfield open box for $740. It looks like its a pretty solid receiver but i would like to know what anyone has to say about it. I have my home theater set up in a small room right now with all polk rti series bookshelfs so i think this would power everything well enough. Although I would buy this with the intention of using it as a preamp with externals down the road a few years when i'm able to build a dedicated large multi-row theater.
Looking at the specs on this it looks like it has ability for 7.2 and two other zones, 2ch each. But it also says it can do front heights and front wides. So is it potentially configurable into a 11.2 system if you reprogram the two other zones for that? Not that it would be that important but it would be cool to have the ability to have a full 11.2 system in a very large theater room.
Let me know any thoughts, thanks.

this isn't answering any of your questions--I think that you lose some of your channels when you switch to multiple zones, somebody much more knowledgeable than I can answer that question--I just wanted to point out that you can get an Onkyo 807 new at Newegg for $750, I've seen them go as low as $700 new.

I have an 807 and really like it. But, its my understanding that it only has 7 amplifiers so powering more than 7 speakers is out of the question.

I just bought it directly from Onkyo, a reconditioned one for $580. I hope I made the right decision, I'm strapped for cash right now and I bought my current sony receiver just a few months ago so i'm really hoping this one meets my expectations.

I tried to find all I could about this receiver on web reviews and its gotten a lot of positive feed back. I downloaded the manual for it and it shows all 11 speakers connected at once and has binding posts for all of them but then is described as a 7 channel amp so that has me a little puzzled. Like i said, i would have no use for all the extra channels for a few years when i have the space, but it would be cool if all i needed to do were buy amps and speakers and be set with this as a processor.

The audyssey features that come in this avr seem like they do a lot of auto calibration and adjusting which seems cool. One other question i have is its say the hdmi output can be adjusted for brightness, contrast, ect... is there a way to bypass all of the picture adjustments? because i just had my plasma isf calibrated and don't want to mess up the perfect picture.

I have the 807 and quite like it..

You can't run all channels at once, you have to choose between rear effects or height effects (or wide I think). The higher level Onkyo's can run more speakers at once...

You can set the outbound HDMI to not do any processing, I'll check the exact setting later, but I think it's 'pass through'

this link has been very useful for me...

I too had just bought a Sony a couple of months ago. The STR-DN1000. I wasn't that happy with it and did more research and settled on the 807. Very happy this time. As far as the video corrections, I just leave them all at "off" or "0" and it doesn't effect the picture. And yes, all the binding posts are there and you can hook speakers to all of them if you like. But you can only use seven at any one time.

Oh that makes sense then. yeah i bought the sony dh800, which uses the same internal amp and a lot of the same features at the dh1000... it got me the lossless formats and 7.1 but i wasnt happy for long. im hoping with the combo of all the audessy features, more powerful internal amps, and the ability to add on external amps this thing will last me a long time and work good in any size setup.
