    Do a search, rather than demanding. Your question has been asked atleast a hundred times in the past year. All the info and specifics you want are already here. The thing is many of us get tired of people asking the same exact questions over and over and over and over and when you're not willing to search the archives for your own answer, people aren't going to respond yet again.

    IMO, you can't get much for $300, even used.

    I'm not busting your balls, just some friendly advice as there is a lot of info out there already. Maybe if you find some older threads then you can ask some specific questions.

    You will be hard pressed to get HDMI, 7.1 and pre-outs for $300.

    Denon
    Onkyo
    Pioneer
    HK

    all seem to get good marks, so it's a matter of what bells and whistles you can get in your budget. The HK seems a little warmer sounding than the others. This might be a consideration as the Polk Monitor line can have a tendency to be on the bright side.

    I'm not into HT, just solid 2 channel so that's about all the advice I can give at this point.

    here are a few. Personally I would save up a bit more and get a Pioneer or used Onkyo but thats just me.

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1279716208&&&/Yamaha-RXV665BL

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1279902333&&&/YAMAHA-RXV567

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1278898395&&&/ONKYO-TXSR508

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1276020508&&&/ONKYO-TXSR608

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1276019807&&&/Pioneer-VSX1020K

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1274733737&&&/Marantz-SR-60001

    Now the problem with a lot of these is they don't have pre outs meaning that if you ever wanted to run an amp you can't. A lot of lower end AVR's don't have them. Also some of the older ones lack DD True HD, DTS Master ect. I would just check around and be patient. The one I would save up for and look for when I get more cash would be

    http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?rcvr71ch&1281232291&&&/Pioneer-Elite-SC07-

    Does everything you need, has a great amp section, decodes everything, and I personally like the calibration system Pio uses.

    Some of the older Yamaha 7.2 AVR's can be found used around your price range.The Yamaha RX-V 663 is considered a better unit than the newer RX-V665. Same thing with the RX-V863, better than the newer 865. If you're like most of us here,you'll be eventually upgrading to a better system with separate amps,preamp or processor etc. With technology changing so fast nowadays, I'm going to wait a couple of years and keep using my 663 as a preamp/processor.

    LOL... well, if you demand answers here you go:

    Onkyo TX-SR805

    1. Can be had in you price range (used obviously)
    2. I have one and have been very satisfied
    3. It has HDMI (which I don't use, BTW)
    4. It has lots of power and even drove my LSi's decently
    5. It has respectable 2 channel sound in Pure Audio or Direct modes
    6. Has Audessey
    7. Nice remote, lighted
    8. Has pre-outs, multi-ch inputs, and lots of other stuff on the back
    9. Has dimmer function
    10. On screen programming
    11. Lots of inputs with intellivolume and other programmable stuff

    How's that?

    3-5 hundies for what you want will be tough even used. You may have to go with an avr without pre outs and with a decent amp section for the time being untill coinage is more available.

    Or exercise a bit of patience, save more money, and get a better avr the first time around that will hold him for several years.

    just throwen this out there....how about a refurb hk avr.....which one would be best.....in all reality i only need two hdmi(one for cable box and one for dvd).....i also plan on adding a two or three channel amp eventually....so the hk wold only need to power my surrounds (2 m30's) (hopefully four if i upgrade to 7.1)im just not sure when the amp will come into play so the avr would have to be stellar enough to power all 5 speakers in the mean time....along with 1080 processing....

    I'm using an HK AVR 254. Lot's of recommendations on this from many people over the past 12 to 18 months. An excellent choice, IMHO. I went through a couple of Yamahas and an Onkyo before setting on this.

    I think so. And, for the record, everyone says don't compare HK's watts per channel rating to others. It's a high current design with plenty of power for Monitor series AND it has preouts for future use.

    I have a lower model Onkyo rated at 80 wpc. I like the HK better, mostly because of its warmer tone. My Yamahas were rated at 90 and 105, but were too bright when paired with my RTis.

    Power cables? That's the part you plug into the wall, right? ;) What about 'em?
