My wife asked me this tonight...

"Do you want anything else for Christmas besides stinkin' DVD's?"

After a very short pause the response was "Nope". I said I'd try to think of something else, but what do I need **** like clothes for anyway? :)

    Kberg,

What do you watch you DVD's on? Have you seen the quality of a high definition plazma? That is one of the things I would want.

    :D

A 32" Toshiba CRT set. Still puts out an excellent picture after about 8 years, and the idea of even suggesting a plasma set right now could send my wife through the roof, especially after just plunking down over $800 for the SVS. I did tell her a while back that a plasma is in the works after the price drops a LOT more. I think she's more open to that idea when the price is more right, as she doesn't care about sound at ALL, but sight is another thing that she and the kidlets will likely appreciate more.

plasma's picture isn't that great. Sure, the 10,000 dollar ones look pretty nice, but they look about the same as a similarly sized Rear projection HDTV that will set you back only 2,000. Plasma is for rich people, RPTV and front projection systems are for enthusiasts with realistic budgets

Alot of Plasma tvs are prone to burn in aswell. A Nice LCD rear projection or DLP would do the trick Wicked picture and a replaceable bulb picture never degrades!

Rear projection sets have, for the most part, always kinda bugged me with the typical problem of having to sit directly in front of it and at a certain distance for the best picture. True, they can be had for relatively low cost, but I'm not sure it's for me.

Try the DLP TV's- Off angle viewing is excellent. Directly in fron is best, but up to about 70 degrees or so there isn't a whole lot of drop off. I would guess the LCD screens would be the same but I have no experience with them.
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

I love the picture on the DLP's (at least the samsung's) and the idea of not having to worry about burn in. i did a senior research project on MEMS digital micro-mirror arrays (including the TI chip) and find the technology fascinating and much more promising than plasma and LCD's.

i haven't kept up over the past couple years though. i know the Samsungs do NOT support 1080i... are there any other DLP TV makers that support 1080i? i guess i could dive back in and do a little research on TI's latest DLP chip but i'm not in school anymore and too damn lazy. besides, i hated that MEMS course anyways :p

If you don't have one, the Radio Shack analog SPL meter is only like $30 and she could pick it out herself.

My wife bought me gear once.... once... a car stereo that she bought when we were dating that I graciously accepted, then waited a reasonable amount of time to inform her that I wanted to return it to get the one I wanted.

She doesn't like me picking out a VERY specific item and basically getting my own Christmas present. I did so two years ago with a drill press (even ordered it myself from Amazon).. then last year with a combination sander (which I picked up myself from Lowe's). She doesn't want to do that anymore...

The rear projection LCD the fatherinlaw got has a 170 deg viewing angle. I was sitting at I would say 20 deg angle from the side of it and the picture was as clear as if I was straight on. That is one of the most important features I would look for the Wide Viewing angle!
