Well, since no one else has commented on the Denon....I think some of your decision may lie on what it will be used for. The HK and the Denon tend to have a warmer sound, which would be better for music. The Onks tend to be a bit brighter, which works better for HT in many cases. All three are good receivers in their own right, but I would pick the Denon myself. If not the Denon, then I would have no problem with the HK either. I'm a Marantz lover, and Denon is owned by the same peeps. Their customer service made me their brand **** since they tried so hard(and succeeded) to make me a happy customer when I had an issue a while back. That aside, I do prefer the warmer more musical receivers over the brighter ones. I'm not saying the Onk is bad, I just prefer the sound of a HK/Marantz/Denon:) There are many folks on here who are very happy with Onkyo to.

There is one thing I don't like about the HK though. It doesn't have A/B speaker outputs, which what kept me from getting one in the first place. You, however, may have no need for that. So, back to my first statement...What will be your intended use? That will allow people to give you more detailed advice/opinions. Happy shopping!

I have an HKAVR354 and love it! I had an Onkyo 606 (One model before, and one level below the 707) and it was no comparison. If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me a private message.

+1, James is right. The HKAVR354 does NOT compete with the Onkyo 600 series it puts out cleaner sound at higher volumes than that.

You'd really have to get up to the 800 Onkyo series to match it but it would still be warmer...well worth the price quoted above.....!!

The vast majority of receivers simply cannot drive speakers to thier full potential. But until one gets a seperate amp, you just don't/can't hear what you are missing.

People give HK high marks, so get the one that meets all of your reqmts & then in time get a 5-7 channel 200wpc or more amp.

Any receiver can/will play your speakers, but adding an amp will ensure you are hearing what they are truly capable of sounding like.

Getting at least 200wpc will also ensure that you have enough power to drive almost any speaker to thier full potential now & in the future since you can keep it through all other upgrades to your system.

For lower end ARVs, between the Denon and Onkyo, I would pick the Onkyo for reliability issues. It's a turn-off to see the "made-in-China" on the back of the low-end of the Denon and to me it's a make-or break the deal.

That's being said, I would buy the Denon but not less than the 4810 series. Denon ( same with Marantz) , Yammaha and now Pio low-end AVRs hav been move to China. You's better off with savings some $$$$ and get the higher-end price tag from Denon.

For H/T application, Onkyo will be the best ticket as far as street price and reliabilty. People cried abt the Onkyo overheat issues, my 876 runs cool as cucumber all the time and so is my Pio SC05. Room temperature and placement are the key to keep these AVRs run cool.

For 2 channel listening, forget these AVRs. Save up some $$$ to buy an intergrated amps or separated amps/ pre-amp. Most importantly is to find a corehent pair of speakers to suit your taste of music then build the system around the speakers. Happy listening and may the audio God will lead you to the right path.

So true. the Harman Kardon amplifiers have always been high current designs with a lot of head room. I've looked inside HK amps and an Onkyo, and the HK uses output transistors and the Onkyo had a "power IC". I don't know if that matters but thermal runaway and thermal distortion is a possibility.
