I must admit 1.4 has made it difficult to make moves to new gear. Oppo has always been on my short list, but I am not sure if it would be an improvement to the PS3. I would like to hear the SE direct analog through my Parasound P7 though. Anyone have a thought?

Who cares about 1.4 unless you're going 3d?

The Oppo will best the PS3 in every category possible except online content, and potentially future upgradeability.

Yes I do. That thought is: "yes you would".

I'll go 3D as soon as they come out with 3D contact lenses, until then, the glasses are just not that stylish.

This statement implies absolute ignorance of technological development in Oppo.

However, HDMI 1.4 would freeze out all existing PS3's, contrary to the stated claim that current PS3's would support BD 3D thru firmware upgrades. Also, this HDGuru article (previously posted in a PS3 thread) says BD 3D will be output as 1080p/48 or 1080p/120; the former is certainly within the PS3's capabilities, and quite possibly the Oppo's as well.

Though it's too early to say whether or not the Oppo will get a BD 3D upgrade, it's certainly possible the same tricks that will allow the PS3 to go 3D thru firmware *could* do it for the Oppo too. Though I'm a PS3 fan myself, since Oppo seems to be the only SA manufacturer whose level of firmware support is anywhere close to that of the PS3 (and the Oppo is clearly better than the PS3 in some areas), I certainly hope Oppo can pull it off.

Your consistent comments make me think Oppo sucks wet hairy donkey balls in the same manner as Emotiva. LOL. But, I do like the way it plays Blu-rays.

EDIT: Donkey Balls added for emphasis.

I think the concern over 3D capability at this time is overstated at best. There are very few 3D movies available and few 3D capable displays, personally I think that 3D is a fad that will come and go and even if it isnt it will at best be a few years before enough media is available to make it even semi worthwhile investing in a display and player. Unless you want to spend thousands to watch half a dozen movies now. Are you going to be concerned about having to have 4d when it comes out also? By 4d I mean smell a visiion :p

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I love my oppo for the simple reason I can bittorrent a movie, copy to my USB stick and plug it into oppo and I am watching on my Plasma. Sure you could use tversity to your xbox360 or something but Oppo is great in every way.

oh see I was thinking 4D with like feeling. like when there is a splash of water it comes shooting straight out at you. Noah's Ark has this with a Spongbob thing. kinda cool if your a kid, but depending on what I would be watching, I woudln't want some things sprayed on me!

oh and 3D and 1.4 I think are pretty dumb at this point. Wearing the glasses over glasses makes me feel like a bigger nerd than I already am and just is dumb. Never was a big 3D fan. I think the Oppo is still a great player and will continue to be a great one for load time and scaling ect and the sound quality is great for 2 channel (even better I've heard for the modded ones).

How do you know that it's illegal? He might have downloaded home-made movies which the authors have allowed others to download :D

Actually there are news that autostereoscopic 3D TVs are being tested, so the 3D technology is still in the evolving mode.

I own an Oppo BDP-83 and have upgraded it to Special Edition a couple months ago. I'm glad I did! Listening to CD/SACD music via 2-channel output in my Zone 2 is so much clearer, smoother, and sweeter than the original :)

One other thing: playing some MP3 music by plugging my USB flash drives to the front of the Oppo is so much easier than using the flash drive with my Denon AVR-4810ci receiver. I really appreciate the thoroughness of the Oppo BDP-83 SE :)

I love being able to stream uncompressed blu-ray rips with lossless audio directly to my PS3 (no need for tversity) via my powerline wireless network, and not being limited to FAT32 file types. =)

A buddy of mine has the Oppo and it is very nice though!

As for the 3D thing....its too early in its infancy to jump on the ship...even as an early adopter. There really isn't any content, and there are a lot of reasons that 3D in its current form won't last.

On the other hand, 3DTV's are relatively cheap, and its seems most TV's will be 3D ready going forward. In my opinion though, I would have rather seen manufacturers continue to improve 2D displays....back-lit LED LCD's have a lot of potential, but they really haven't gone anywhere. If anything, they've taken a step backwards in 2D displays...going from LED back lit LCD's, to edge-lit LED LCD's. It seems that given the economy, 3D displays was a cheaper way to improve display technology and deliver to consumers on a mass market scale. Back-lit LED TV's can cost well over $4,000...most 3DTV's are only slightly more expensive than their 2D counter-parts.

I personally won't be buying another TV until OLED big screen TV's become a reality.
