Last ps3 question before I order.

Can the blueray be controlled through the ps3 controller, or do you have to purchase the remote?

Thanks,
Jeff

No need to buy the remote. The controller works fine. I will say the remote is "better".
    The PS3 is DA BOMB!!!

yes, the controller will work but good luck figuring out what buttons do what. The remote is a very nice upgrade and $20 well spent.

    Thanks for the info.

Now the real last question hahah

Will Universal remotes control the ps3 blueray?
Being I currently use 4 different remotes, thinking about something like a harmony -

The PS3 remote is bluetooth as opposed to the Harmony remotes which are IR. Out of the box it wont work, but there are other ways. Take a look at this:

    http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Harmony-Remote-General/The-Harmony-880-and-PS3/td-p/98349;jsessionid=D6D64DFFF27132710CA41E8BDDD1C2BC

You can also get one of these adapted to control your PS# from a harmony remote:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Adapter-Playstation-3/dp/B00267S7XW

This adapter takes the IR signal from the Harmony remote and converts it to bluetooth then sends it to the PS3. Kinda cool, it just sucks that you have to spend another $60 on this adapter to get your already-expensive remote to work with the PS3.

the PS3 controller works just fine as a remote.. all you have to do is hit the Triangle button and use that to navigate like a remote.. its not that hard.. that said, i'm sure a remote is a little easier, but definitely not necessary
    Main 2ch -
    BlueSound Node->Ethereal optical cable->Peachtree Audio Nova 150->GoldenEar Triton 2+
TT - Pro-ject Classic SB with Sumiko Bluepoint.

    TV 3.1 system -
    Denon 3500 -> Dynaudio Excite 32/22

    Thx all for the information,

Those adapters for the harmony seem really cool, but probably not worth the expense for me.

Being I currently use 4 different remotes, thinking about something like a harmony -

I use the Schmartz PS3-IR500 ($39.95) adapter with my Pronto TSU9600 universal remote. It converts the IR signals of my remote to blue tooth that the PS3 uses. It works great.

    http://www.schmartstuff.com/ps3ir500.html

They make cheaper ones and more expensive ones. I chose this one because it allows for remote on off which many of the others do not. It should be noted that you need a powered USB port to be able to power on the PS3 through the remote.

I used the PS3 controller as my remote for a couple of years, but it was a pain in the ****. It's a controller for a reason.

I bought the Nyko Blu wave remote for $10. Plugged the dongle in the USB port. Chucked the remote and it works perfect with my harmony one remote. Only thing it doesn't do is turn it on/off but no biggie since I have to put the game/blu ray in anyway.

amazon has them for $14.95 but you can probably get them off ebay cheap

    http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Blu-Wave-Remote-Playstation-3/dp/B000R5H7KE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1265400323&sr=8-1

You just add it as a device and you are all set.

    Best and cheapest solution IMHO>

    PS3 controller is nice.

Remote feels well built and adds one nice feature that I don't think is directly on PS3 controller: the EJECT button.

I have two kids that are constantly letting the controllers run out of charge. I picked up the remote and it's a lot nicer to use over the controllers. If only it was backlit

I'm a big fan of the harmony remotes, i have the 880 with the blue tooth adapter, its a nice setup and i only need 1 remote to control everything (directv ird, onkyo avr, ps3, xbox 360, samsung hdtv), and not to mention its rechargeable, so no more looking for batteries :)

I recommend the PS3 remote if you have a significant other or people who don't play video games in your household. If you think about it objectively, PS controllers are the worst to outsiders - as if A,B,C,X,Y weren't cryptic enough, think of Triagle, X, O, Square, and Select. Plus, you need two hands to operate it, which is kind of weird in every situation except video games.

The BD remote is nice and solid, and you can still contol all normal (non-movie) PS3 functions except play games. You can go through all the menus and media (pictures, videos, music, settings) and turn the PS3 on/off.

I was given a Harmony One for helping a friend do some manual labor, so the $60 for the converter was money well spent for me. I wouldn't recommend the remote separately unless you have some tech-illiterate folks in house. I don't need it, but if I bought my dad a PS3, he'd be sure to get the remote as part of his gift...

The controller works just fine. All you need is the triangle button and you can do anything you need to.

Another reccomendation for the Harmony remote plus adaptor. Big fan of them and the Harmony One is probably the best to date. I'm still using an 880 but the bluetooth adaptor made using my system that much more enjoyable.

most cable boxes have a powered USB and you can use that. Hope this helps the turn on issue.

I would like a remote, because it doesn't need charged, and it's easy to bump an analog and send the movie into a fast forward freespin.

I agree...20 dollars on sale for the PS3 remote--it's a no brainer especially if you have family members who are not used to the normal GAME controller...which is a bit inconvenient for 'simple' blu-ray play. The only thing, though, is YOU have to tell the PS3 you have a NEW remote in the menu before it will operate!
