Receiver update choices

Ok, I'm selling my Yamaha RX-V861 to my friend (who is just now getting a surround setup-never been a priority for him) and I'm looking at some of the following options.

Yamaha RX-V863 (just the update from my current receiver)

Pioneer VSX-9040TXH (the Canadian version of the VSX-21TXH)

Denon AVR-2310CI

Onkyo TX-SR707

I'm leaning towards the Denon at the moment, but which of these is clearly better? Is there one in a similar price range (base 700-1000-but most of these I can find deals for 500-600) anyone else can recommend?

I would wait for the new 2010 models coming out that are HDMI 1.4 and 3D compatible.

It's just around the corner...Onkyo is already advertising the coming of the 608 on its site. This will be followed in the summer by the 708 and the 808. All will have 1.4 HDMI.

I'm not sure when the new Pio's are coming out? But I would go with a Pio or an Onkyo! Listen to both and decide for yourself!

If the OP has no intent of going 3D why wait. Some aren't interested in 3d so if that's the case I would buy now.

I'm not hugely interested in 3d, can easily live without it, and the extra features for HDMI 1.4 aren't worth my waiting either. Soon I'll make a purchase since I'm sure a lot of manufacturers will want to move things out of the way for 3d and 1.4.
I also saw the H/K AVR 2600 that looks fitting too. Choices choices... The problem with some of the choices I'm looking at though, is some of them are not sold anywhere near me, so I can't listen to them!

Funny thing is that I've watched 3D on regular TV not Digital in 3D. Spy Kids was one.

If you are not worried about the 1.4 or 3D, I would recommend the Onkyo 707. Burr Brown DAC's, and more connections/features than you can shake a stick at. Looking at the new Onkyo's (the 508/608) it's nice to see they kept the Burr Brown's in them too. Why is it the year I decide to buy a new AVR was the only year they took them out, lol.

I'd take Denon off the list...NO Pre-outs....you may need those later and it helps the resale value. I like the Pioneer and the Onkyo, Harman Kardon is also a nice sounding AVR but the set ups are Medieval. Listen to everything and see what you like.

If really pressed I'd say Pioneer as my first pick!

3D and 1.4 HDMI won't be seeing my money anytime soon. Hell my HT was just redone a little over a year ago with my Samsung Plasma, Pioneer SC-07, and a Pioneer BluRay player. Maybe in a couple of years..

I am extremelly happy with my pioneer vsx23, great sounding avr imo.

Could not go wrong with either the pio or the onk, but i have read that the onk is more bright by nature.

    Good luck

I consider 3D capable as bleeding edge, meaning that you pay extra to support a vendor's developing of an emerging technology that may not ever become truly mainstream or even compatible with what is bought now if it does become mainstream.

HDMI 1.4 is probably here to stay, as HDMI is fully established (not sure what 1.4 really provides from the practical stand point). On the other hand, pre-out capability is definitely useful.

Actually I went ahead, bit the bullet and spent a little extra-but still found a good deal-on the Onkyo HT-RC180.
I got it about $400 less than the full sale cost, but it has the inputs I want, the volume equalization, all the stuff I am looking for. Now I just need to find a dock for the ipod but I don't want to pay $100 just for that.
