Doc, The Ring - so maybe large animals being hacked to bits in propellors and electricutions make me queasy - but I guess I'm just too hard to scare.
Not a huge fan of horror/gore so can't really say I have a "favorite". -

1) The Exorcist - I won't watch this film alone and in the dark, not gonna happen.
The Ring scared me badly, and generally made me feel very uncomfortable throughout.
Those first two Halloweens were horribly frightening for me, that Carpenter really knew how to bring about that feeling of dread.

RINGU
I see that a few of you like The Ring. Ringu is the original version from Japan. The movie is English subtitled. I haven't seen The Ring but I can tell you that Ringu is f#cking scary. The whole movie is intense and some scenes are just too damn scary. I love the climax of the film. I had goosebumps throughout the whole movie. You guys should check it out.

"Friday the 13th Part VII: Jason Lives" saw this when I was 9 years old; in theaters; and it scared the $h!+ outta me. "Wrong Turn" was pretty creepy too. If you could take your eyes off of Eliza Dushku's ****.;)

The original "Tales From The Crypt" back in the late 70's. I couldn't sleep for a week after seeing this in the theater.Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support

Yeah, when a kid is involved, it usually gets me.
Anybody who hasn't seen this one yet, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's only $10 at BB if you want to buy it blind, too. And if you do, crank it up for some really decent scares.Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

I think there are different kinds of scary.
Edit: sorry, I apparently chose to ignore your "1 only please" request. Not on purpose, but ignore nonetheless.
I saw Jaws in the theater when I was in like 6th grade... gave me nightmares for WEEKS. Even as an adult, doing something like water skiing, waiting for the boat to come around to pick me up.. in a FRESHwater, inland lake.. I'm just sure I'm gonna get eaten.
An American Werewolf in London was scary, doubly-so in my opinion because in one scene it'd have you laughing, the next ... SHOCK!
I think the Exorcist is probably the most scary, but not "shock" scary.
I agree with The Shining, some of the original slasher-type flicks, I thought the remake of The Thing was scary.
I think all the Ernest movies are pretty scary, but more due to their indicativeness of our culture. -
What Lies Beneath
The Gift
The Ring
My kind of "Scary". None are slasher/blood gore. These freak you out and make ya jump!!!!!!
Bottom line is nothing scares anybody now a days. And when it does the "macho" kicks in / de nile. -

This movie is out of print and only available on VHS. You can still buy it used at AMAZON.com. I saw it in 1990. Very scary! way better than newer horror flicks.
