Well, I got an e-mail from outlaw this morning saying they are scrapping my next planned upgrade. Their new 997 pre-pro. This has been in delayed status since it was introduced over a year and 1/2 ago. (mainly due to issues out of Outlaws hands)

Anyway - they have plans to move forward with a new processor and it looks like I will have a little more time to save my pennies......

Their new processor (now dubbed the 998) is to be out by the end of they year - While that does sound quite optimistic, it is more believable than the 997 being out by that time.....

998 planned features:
Built and spec'ed by Outlaw (not based on another companies design)
HDMi 1.4a (with front panel jacks)
all kinds of dolby stuff and balanced outputs
Trinnov Optimizer will be on board (the real reason I was waiting for the 997)

Anyway - We will wait and see. I will still, at this point, put my next processor upgrade between the Emotiva XMC-1 and the Outlaw-998. Both are vaporware at this point (with barely more than a spec sheet to recommend them) but hopefully by this time next year, we will have devices we can actually test and demo.

Just thought I would share.

The 997 was one of the main Pre/Pros I was interested in as well after having outstanding experiences with the 990. Once they announced the 997 I was so looking forward to it's arrival. BUT, after having so many delays and setbacks which I understand was not their fault I jumped ship a long time ago. If Outlaw can get it out by years end I would be surprised. I'd love to see what they come up with and I'm still interested but giving their track record here lately I'm still a little skeptical. Only time will tell.

i don't know what's up with the Pre/Pro missed promised date that seem to be a rampant epidemic across all brands. It seems the two options available is either releasing the unit with all the bugs included (i.e. REF70) or missed the date and promise a new date, missed that date, and so on and so forth (i.e. Parasound Halo C3).

I get to a point that I'd rather have a bird in hand than 5 birds in the sky.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Great news... the 997 was a disaster waiting to happen. Plus, I was on the fence about it even if it was good because I want Trinnov and I want height channels... problem solved!!
