Welp, my trusty DV-50A Elite has been displaced. :)

Picked up a BDP-51FD from Nik yesterday. Mainly for the Blu-Ray portion of it. BUT... out of curiousity, i tried it out in 2-channel last night.

Holy HELL. :D

It kept all the things that i really liked about the DV-50A, (smooth, great imaging) but it just sounds so FAT. Everything it plays, is played with more authority than before, it sounds WAY more rich to my ears, and it didn't take a hit in ANY department.

The only weird thing is that Standard DVD playback doesn't seem to look QUITE as good, but i haven't done much tweaking of everything yet. And i watched "The Box," which looks like it was filmed kind of strangely anyways, so i'll wait and see what some other movies look like before i judge it. :)

Oh! And it's black face, so it matches the rest of my stuff. :p
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Ben, are you using the HDMI out or component? If you do use component and play a standard DVD and the player detects that it has copy right protection on it, it will play the source straight so it would be 480i material coming out. I just have the problem with this as I use component to my PJ. If your using HDMI it still makes a great picture for DVD's for upconverting but I prefer the DV-58 for DVD play back myself.

Right now i'm just using the yellow component video out, and the stereo outputs to the B&K. Yellow direct to TV.

I'll pick up another HDMI cable this week, it did look way better with the HDMI cable, though i haven't quite figured out this whole upconverting thing yet. :p

Yep, you certainly did. :D I knew it was going to sound pretty good, and honestly i would have been happy if it sounded AS good as my DV-50A. But man, this thing sounds GREAT. Hard to put a finger on what it is exactly, though. It almost has the richness of vinyl, but not quite as warm, obviously. But it's got that "continuous" sound thing going on, not a hint of digital crunch anywhere.

Get the pictures up!!!! (I'm still pissed i forgot my remote for the B&K)

ah yep, more likely then not it will play the source direct as it would be a standard DVD. If you use HDMI you wouldn't have to worry about that. Good buy though, as I saw it too and was going to pick it up lol!
    Lucky!

Especially for what i paid for it. ;)

Like i said, i was just buying it for the BDP aspect, but it's THAT GOOD of a CDP that i think my source joneses have been satisfied for the moment, and instead i'm going to skip to looking for amp or speakers next.

I used it for CDP and it was very good. I think though the BDP is also very good and hard to beat for the price you paid for it. now just get the HDMI rolling and you''ll be set haha.

    Congrats...that's great.

I bought one, myself, before I left for China but NEVER got a chance to play a CD on it before I boxed it up for my year away. So it's good to hear it's a pretty good CD player. That was my first inclination when I bought it cheap. I thought...this thing has got to be a good Blu-ray player...and maybe with all that Elite tech and Wolfsen DACs, etc. I might be able to use it as a CD player for a while until I upgrade!

Enjoy.....(as I remember the earlier posts....I think Grimster and I started a stampede of buying on this 'closeout' model last summer).
