I think I saw some v1 beaters at a pawn shop here for $75 - rough, but complete.

Want me to see if they are still there?

YES! Be sure to look at the surrounds if you do. I wouldn't want to pay any more than that. Plus shipping obviously.

Actually, he should do what I did, and stack the Bose on top of the 1.2's for enhanced imaging and 3d spaciousness. Nothing beats a great stack.

A little depth maybe? Actually I hear that Bose is pretty awesome. I'm planning on replacing my 1.2's with 901's.

I sold my Bose 901 series VI special edition few years ago with
ten years warranty at the Brick Store. Replaced them with
    the 1.2TL's.

Sold it for $950.00 U.S. dollars

    I am not going back...

One very serious consideration when you buy speakers you wish to keep for a long period of time: RUBBER SURROUNDS!!! Almost all the Bose 901's out there need the surrounds replaced. It can be done by an amature but really, who wants to do that sort of thing to 20 some drivers. That could take a week of hard work! Polk uses rubber surrounds which do not rot. Some of the oldest polks are starting to have a glue problem if they get jolted but lets face it, after 20 plus years the things would have been junked long ago if they had the foam surrounds.

    Any word on these Russman?

It took me 2 hours to do 2 10 inch woofers on the advents, the Bose have what? 16? 16 8 inch full rangers or something like that?

    Chuck,

They were gone, and nothing else of any real interest was there.

    Trey,

The 901 uses 1 forward firing, and 8 rear firing 4.5 inch FR drivers per cab.

    *blink blink blink*

    That must have been...

    1) A very ugly speaker
    2) A very BIG and UGLY speaker
    3) A really messed up sound
    4) A good sound that sounded totally fake....

    OR

    5) Just Bose!

Either way, that many woofers, foam surrounds.....I'd have to be drunk and half dead to make that purchase. Holy crap!

Well anyway, thanks a lot russman! I guess I'll probably find a pair on ebay. I appreciate the look see!!! Actually, the 901's were my first favorite speaker. A club I frequented had 30 plus pairs and a nice sub to match with them. (the first sub I had ever seen, back in the late seventies). They had the first 3000 watt tri-amplified setup I had ever seen. I am thinking a pair of 901's will be nice in the work shop, remembering old times and such. Truthfully, this was the first, last and only club that I ever went to that was concerned with supplying high quality sound. The bose was an excellent choice for them in that the sound was good at every table, every where. Just a different era I guess.
    Thanks again,

With proper equalization, via the active eq - or a simple 10-bander of your own, they aren't bad. Worth the new retail price, no.

Another thing, they will take a beating and TONS of power. I'd have em in the garage/shop rig anyday (for the right price).

    Haha, sorry.

Russ said that garage speakers should be under 50 dollars and should be hooked to a half working receiver/cd player combo that has the name plates ripped off ;)

I never mentioned $50, or a receiver/cd player with cosmetic or mechanical issues.

    Well,
I found a pair of 901 V5 on audiogon with Hoosiers' help. Not as cheap as I was looking for ($500) but they were in almost mint shape. Once I get them I'll be able to say I have the best. :D Should be fun to play with.

There are a couple of guys I know with 901's that they picked up overseas years ago......

I don't think they sound awful. Not accurate but musical in thier own way. They definately don't warrant the new price but I'd have a pair for the garage or spare rig.

back in the 80's I remembered got mesmerized by the sound of 901. Its secrets lied with the equalizer/freq. expander box that came with it. In fact, it was the reason why 901 sounds great on the low end. Without the eq. box, it doesn't sound half as good.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

This pair comes with the EQ. OK, so here is what I'm thinking. Polk SDA's sound awesome if the material is properly mixed (old or new material). These 901's may really shine with the lesser than optimum mixes when compared with the SDA's. Lets face it, when nothing is going on in the mix, the SDA's just kinda sit there and die. I am looking for a secondary means for playing some of the do-nothing material. You know, great songs but inferior abilities throughout getting it onto the media.
