Is their any audible difference between the two formats ? Compressed vs Uncompressed and Dolby vs DTS ?

Which ones are better (in your opinions) as far as DTS vs Dolby ? How big is the difference between compressed and uncompressed ?

Uncompressed, there is no difference between Dolby True HD and DTS-HD. They are just two methods to compress the same file, and give the same uncompressed lossless results.

For a regular DVD, which uses lossy compression, I prefered DTS over Dolby. It just seems a bit better, but few DVDs offer DTS.

for regular dolby digital and dts, dts seems better for most movies. The DTS format is said to use less compression than dolby so it is a little more engaging. The uncompressed formats are pretty much the same because they are "lossless" meaning they are exactly the same as when the movie was made for theaters, nothing is lost or compressed. Its a pretty big difference between compressed formats and non-compressed.

Dan i was looking at your equipment in your sig and see you use ps3. If you haven't used the lossless audio formats with it yet and are going to, you need to make sure your audio settings on PS3 are set to Linear PCM through HDMI to get the lossless formats... unless you have the new slim ps3.

+1, the older PS3's won't bitstream, only pass the signal via LPCM. I have heard both the newer codecs and I honestly don't have a preference for one or the other, they both sound amazing.

Ya thanks took me awhile to figure that one out but i think i finally have it working, Tried it out today and i really feel that the system see's a huge boost in bass frequencies, way fuller sound

Yeah i was missing out on the lossless formats too when i first hooked mine up cause it was set to bitstream but what a difference it makes when its set up right and getting the HD formats.

With LPCM, you won't get the display to show "Dolby TrueHD" or "DTS HDMA" but all you have to do is press the select button on the PS3 controller and on the top right of the screen it will tell you what format it is playing in.

I have a Pioneer Elite Pro-111fd and Pro-15fd plasma and they have the option in the Sound Setup to set it to Dolby or PCM on the tv. Does that make a difference when watching HD cable tv through HDMI?
