The Book of Eli

**Avoid anyone who has seen this movie but can't keep their mouth shut.**

This is your typical Road Warrior post apocalyptic flick about one man's journey. There are plenty of fight scenes but the film does drag a bit. Ultimately, it is the storyline that pulls you in and the ending saves this movie from being labeled "been there, done that". The revelations at the end requires a bit more faith than I have to believe in The Book of Eli.

Enjoyable. Makes a very good rental. I will buy the BR just to see it again after the secrets are revealed.

The Road looks good, this does not. But then again Denzil is one of my least favorite actors on this planet so I'll avoid it anyway.

Not a big fan of Denzil as well. I think Remember the Titans and Training Day were probably the best. The Book of Eli is almost like Kurt Russell's Escape from New York.

Agreed; I think Denzel is probably the most over-rated actor. I seriously don't know what it is about him except to say that no matter how good the movie, I like it less with him in it. That's why i am torn about this one. I like the idea of the movie and it looks like it has potential, but Denzel ruins it for me.

I will wait for netflix on this one.........

I cannot agree, Denzel pretty much acts the same way in every film he does, very boring onscreen presence.

I had a meeting downtown with a client and nothing to do back at the office afterward, so I decided to take in a movie to stay out of the rain and the traffic. I am not a big Denzel fan at all. I will say I was pleasantly surprised at this movie. It was not boring and I thought Denzel's typical acting persona (ie: dull is an apt description IMO) fit this role to a T. I have yet to see The Road (but it is on my BB online rental queue). I liked the cinematic "look" of this film and though it set a good tone. I also thought the theme of the movie outside of the typical apocalyptic stuff was interesting. It is certainly worth a rental.

As an aside…I also liked “The Postman” which is generally panned so maybe I am just a fan of this genre. I am also a fan of the author of “the Postman”, David Brin, which is certainly a factor.

I saw the Blu ray last night and enjoyed it. I'm a big Denzel fan and liked the story line.

The sound quality was top notch too. The gun shots and shotgun blasts sounded so life-like. I had to turn it down a notch during the shoot-out scenes. Great rental. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

After hearing so much high praise on this movie, I finally got a chance to check it out last week. It was a really good movie, but with all of the positive hype, I guess I was expecting to get totally blown away with it,kinda like expecting it to be one of the greatest movies ever. Don't get me wrong, I liked the acting, storyline, message, and sound editing, I just let the overly high expectations sway me. Definitely worth owning, but I think I'm going to wait to buy it when the price is around $9.99, I'm such a cheapskate, lol.

We just received it today from Netfix . . . can't wait to watch it tonight! I'm a big Denzel fan too. Ern Dog any idea if the sound is as good on DVD?

Steve, I loved the Postman. I've seen at least 6 times and could go another 6 with it.

Polkie 2009, I've learned and have made it a practice to NEVER get my expectation up about a movie (or anything for that matter) that get's great reviews . . . it only causes disappointment. However on the positive side I've seen plenty of movies which were panned by the critics and when I read reviews of said movie here it was also panned, I found it to be a great movie.

Personally, I bought it based on reviews, and I generally like science fiction type movies, but, for me, this would have been a better rental than purchase. The pseudo-religious part, while central to the story, was ridiculous. I like science fiction since there is a basis of believability to the plot. Fantasy on the other hand is just that, fantasy, which has no basis in reality.

If that is your thing then you probably will enjoy the movie more than I did.

4 out of 5 for me also. I really liked this movie. Saw it at the theater and then on Blue Ray at home.

The road was mentioned above. I missed that in the theater and then read the book. I really like Vigo. The movie was well made but like the book was very depressing and dark.

These two movies together on one weekend are a scary prediction if Hollywood is right at what happens without law and order.

Lol, yea, those high expectations can sometimes be too_ high. All in all, I'd still highly recommend it for others to see, just wouldn't say it's one of the best movies ever.

The flick was all right, not worth all the praise it's been getting.

Denzel isn't really a BAD actor, just a predictable one. He plays one character, he just plays that character pretty well.

Mila Kunis is great ot look at but really can't act.

The story was just ridiculous. I know a lot of you folks are religious, and that's fine, but the fawning over the Bible in this movie was way over the top and literally made no sense at all.

And my last complaint was the cinematography was a bit overdone. Overstylized movies can be fun to a point, but this just felt like a two hour mental masturbation by the director(s).
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I loved the movie. Denzel was great in it and theme of the power of the Word of God in the Bible was just enthralling to me. If you love Bible themed movies this one is a winner. If you hate the Bible or believe it to be a fairy tale then I would say to steer clear of it.

Gary Oldman as usual did a great job. I liked Ray Stevenson too. Malcolm McDowell's cameo put the finishing touches on a great ending.

I'm not a big fan of post apocalyptic movies but I loved this one.

BTW I think Denzel is a great actor and I have yet to see one of his movies that I didn't like.

I just saw this on blu-ray, and although I don'treally have anything to add to the thread that hasn't already been said, I liked it a lot. I'm thinking this is a movie I'll buy.

Also, Mila Kunis is pretty easy to watch, and makes Megan Fox look like an acting robot. :p

Maybe I cheated myself by reading here first, but the ending was good, not mind bending. I guess I expected more out of this one, b/c at the end of it I thought "well, that was ok."

Certainly worth a watch, but not one I'll own. Glad I got it on Netflix instead of the kneejerk blu-ray purchase...

I agree with bobman on this one for the most part.
