Oppo adds a cheaper Blu-ray player to its lineup with the $289 BDP-80

This would be the one to get if you aren't doing any SD DVD upscaling. However, if that were the case, I might look at some other brands as well.

One thing for sure, Oppo makes a great product and you can rest assured you will get future support and CS that is second to none.

for that price mite as well get a ps3,lots more features

I saw this and must say that i am interested in it. I told the wife about it and did not even get a roll of the eyes. That means it may happen sooner rather than later. I like the SACD and DVDA playback.

When talking about upconversion, it still has to better then the cheap BDP's right. Currently i am using a Toshiba hd-dvd player i got super cheap after they lost the format war. I am pretty happy with the picture quality of that on regular DVD's.

Just seen it.

Cant beat that. Plays anything you throw at it.

Thanks but no thanks. Not too thrilled about sacrificing that Anchor Bay chipset. You might also notice that on the site it's pretty clear that the 80 is NOT for home theatres with very large screens (counts me out). Still planning to pay the extra for the 83 as soon as I have some extra scratch. Going to move my Sammy into the bedroom.

Read an article about a week ago, Sound and Vision mag, about the end of this year comming out with 3-d players. It also added the fact that 3-d will only be able to be transmitted over hdmi 1.4. Any of you guys have that yet ? Yes I'm being sarcastic. Also you will need a TV with hdmi 1.4 and if you want to route it all through the receiver,yep,you'll have to have 1.4. Which pretty much makes the oppo obsolete almost from the get go. Of coarse it all means diddley squat if you have no interest in 3-d. I personally don't but hey, some of you guys like to have the latest and greatest.Panasonic is the big pusher behind it and with recently grabbing a hold of pioneers kuro technology, there should be some interesting products on board for next x-mass. Save your coin, for that new TV,new receiver,and new player, I'm sure oppo will come out with a 3-d player by next spring.

I haven't seen too much 3D and I'm getting too old for ****, but I'd definitely think about upgrading if the 3D quality is Avatar good, which adds depth and perspective with just a few subtle effects, rather than "dick in your face" stunts that usually are implemented in these features.

As to the player...well it's got a propreitary chipset which isn't even identified by the parts used. I wouldn't worry about it though, the upconversion will probably be at least as good as the old 980. BR is pretty much on par industry wide...and I will be interested in reading about load times. That's a pretty steep hill to climb for most players. I don't know if it's a transport/laser issue or firmware. If it ain't mechanical, then the Oppo should be very fast.

Don't forget the $100 glasses you will need to buy ea person to watch.

The PS3 is not 1.4 but will be able to do 3D. You will not need a new receiver, you can buy a 3D BD player with dual HDMI out's or just by a splitter. But you will need a new TV.

I don't think 3D will take off until sometime in 2012 - 2013 or even later. People are just not going to run out and get a new TV, BD player etc... There will not be alot of 3D movies coming out next year on BD.

I went and watched Avatar 3D. I kept taking my glasses off to watch it. No 3d for me for a very long time.

I suspect this is an apples to oranges comparison. I have the BD83, and while it does a great job displaying a BR picture, and decoding the audio into LPCM, it's build quality leaves a lot to be desired. I have other CA equipment and the build quality on it is superb, so I would expect the 650 BRP to be on par. Whether it is worth the extra $200 over the BD83 I do not know. However, it is less expensive than the new modded BD83. To compare it to Oppo's new entry level player is probably not valid.

In what way? The $290 Oppo BDP-80 is very, very, similar to the $900 Oppo BDP-83SE.
