While I must first put the disclaimer that no laptop is as good as a desktop for gaming, I think the Gateway FX series are an incredible value for gaming. I've had my P-6860FX for a little over a year now, I'm selling it, but only because I've moved home from school, and as such my gaming will now be done on my desktop.
Just remember, for gaming, 1440x900 LCDs are best; even the most beefy laptop video cards will struggle with 1920x1200.
If cost is no issue, I'd say look at Sager Notebooks; Best performance, but chances are you won't get out the door for sub $3,000. -

+1 on the gateway,
But honestly even the best gaming laptops suck balls compared to a well built desk top.
My words of wisdom are laptops are for portability Desk tops are for power.
For example my desk top specs are
3.0 quad core OCed to 3.8 prime stable
ATI 4890
1Tb seagate 7200.12
4 gigs 1066 ram
750 watt corsair power supply
NZXT tempest case
Total coast $800
You can't hope to get a lap top with that kind of power for any amount of money.
how ever if you are determined to get the best there ever was
http://www.falcon-nw.com/
they do stuff like automotive quality custom paint jobs and put desk top CPUS in laptops.
Every time I see a falcon nw build i give shivers down my spine.
However for the money nothing will beat whats in the gateway FX line there known for a lot of bang for the buck.

Intel makes the fastest currently but AMD's are fast enough.
The GPU is way more important for gaming. your going to want the 9800m or better GTX 280m if you afford it. For ATI the mobile 5000 series are about to come out and they will kick ****. But over all just make sure you see a Nvidia or ATI logo.
When it comes to laptops the best you will do is Duel-core unless you spend large amounts of money to go quad.
The latest and greatest laptop CPU is the Core I7 620M. But any of the Core I 5/7 laptop CPUS will be fine.
The Core i7's are the fastest out there right now on the desktop side of things.
However the phenom II are fast enough for any thing and I m highly competitive gamer and I'm currently running the Phenom II 940 and its fast as hell.Monitor 60s, CS10 front

Wow I just configed a laptop and it's not too bad, only came out to $6230!
The Personalized plate is very cool too!
lol the reason i don't like alien wear is not because of a lack of brawn but rather a lack of build quality. There lap tops and desk tops tend to favor lots of plastic and gaudy glowing alien heads.
Also going back to my words of wisdom, my $800 desk top would smoke that 6grand lap top **** in any bench mark/game.Monitor 60s, CS10 front

Curently the best are Killer Notebooks www.killernotebooks.com
Those are hardcore hand made gamer laptops you can have custom built. -
actually i want to share something with all of you. and i want to say hello. i hope everyone reply me by saying hi. however i think laptop is not suitable for gaming. by the way if you want to buy laptop you should visit market and research about that. because of economical sector. if you areconomically so rich then i have nothing to say. by the way again i want to say laptop is not suitable for game. so .............................:D:D:D:D
and try to look at brand of laptop, its good will and finally money, dollar, pound, ounce etc. ha ha ha:D -

The one thing I did get out of that is that laptops are not suitable for gaming, which I could not disagree with more.
Guys, he didn't start the thread asking your advice on whether he should use a laptop for gaming. I think it goes without saying that a desktop is OBVIOUSLY going to be better for gaming.
The question of the thread was what are the best laptop options for gaming. The Gateway laptops are a great option at a reasonable price. Is it going to play Crysis with all the settings maxed out? Of course not, but for casual gaming these are a great option. -

I'm good, I'm just typically annoyed by responses that actually don't address the original question...

It might but who would look more like a goof on a train going to work, you with your $800 desktop and monitor or me with my Alienware laptop?
lol true, I just did the same thing he did, i blew a little over a grand (1.3k) on a laptop with in large part the best specs you could get on a lap top.
2.5 duel core
4 gigs of ram
9800m
completely under preformed barely was able to push games at 1440x900 with max details. thats not even 1080p ress folks.
Also trying to game on wireless(i know laptop has wired but the point of lap top is wireless) sucked ping was generally 50ms or higher when on a wired I get 5-10ms ping.
Just trying to save him some money if he is serious about gaming. If however he just wants to play WOW or is a casual gamer the Gateways are the best bang for the buck.Monitor 60s, CS10 front
