Magnepan MMG's (black color)

I have a pair of Magnepan MMG's (black), cosmetically 'like new'. I am the original owner, and they were used in a non-smoking, non-feline, temp controlled environment and cared for meticulously.

The reason I am selling is twofold:

Because I have replaced these with slightly larger Magnepan MG12/QR's.

AND, one of the MMG's is exhibiting an annoying 'buzzing' and/or thumping sound at times. I have no idea what this is, and I know it's not from abusing the speaker. Only lately have I noticed this strange anomaly.

I am asking $250 the pair (firm). Pickup in NE Ohio only. Thank you.

Probably delamination of the wire from the mylar, very common in Magnepan's....that is if they were subjected to sunlight/etc.

Goodluck with the sale! Hopefully you stick around.

As the original owner why not call Magnepan and see if they are still in warranty or if they will fix them at reasonable cost? They are good people and take care of their customers. That way you are not trying to sell a "broken" set of speakers.

    +1
They've got excellent CS, and since MMG's are currently in production they should be able to help you out. I think you can ask for Wendy iirc.

All great suggestions, but since I upgraded to MG12's, I don't need the MMG's anymore. They are taking up too much physical space.

I know from time to time, people look for just one for a center channel MMG speaker, and if they can fix the second one themselves, there's an added bonus to this sale, given the low price.

I agree with the others about getting them repaired first. Typically, the trouble with these speakers making the noise you describe is that the adheisive used to bond the wires across the mylar diaphram has started to break down. It may be a simple fix, but is not something generally recommended for a novice. Both speakers should be serviced if that is the case.

The glue starts to wear down at the top, you can do the "sticky" test yourself to confirm that.

Stand behind the speaker and with your fingers, feel around where the wire reaches its highest point and loops back down. You can easily find it if you just flash a light through it. Gently press against the wire, and let go. If you feel that you can press the wire against the mylar, and then hear it come unstuck then it is the glue breaking down in that area. 2 inches of the wire coming loose is probably the max for a quick do it yourself fix. Anything more than that and you'll have to go through the extensive process of rebuilding it completely, or sending it to Magnepan to do it.

Oh and FYI, always keep them out of the sun if they're ever by windows. Bad juju!

That's common in OLDER, as in VINTAGE Magnepan not common in modern Magnepan loudspeakers.

    I stand corrected :p

I did talk to 2 different people though that claimed their MMG's suffered the same fate, one had them near windows with no shades/curtains throughout the daytime. Only found out because I inquired about them since they had them up for sale. Would it be the magnets inside then?

    Goodluck with the sale though!

I have no doubt that being in direct sunlight every day, even with the UV resistant materials they use now, at some point they're going to suffer. If you even whispered the word sunlight to a vintage Magnepan they would shrink up and die....kinda like the wicked witch in Oz. I would 100% agree with the fact that you should try to avoid that type of situation anyways if at all possible.

The MMG is d*ck tease of the Magnepan lineup. It usually lures you farther up the line.

Well, these were never in sunlight. They were in the living room area (north side of house), where curtains are usually drawn shut. When I did have curtains open, the sun can't reach them anyway. Any potential buyer would see what I mean if they saw where my MG12's are positioned currently.

    Sheesh!

'heiney9', please GET A LIFE! I specifically followed the rules as the site stated. And I have proven (via system photos here) that I am indeed a longtime Polk Audio speaker enthusiast and owner. And I have no intentions of leaving, as I find this site interesting. Why the condescending and smarmy attitude? Is this how some of you like to 'welcome' new fellow audiophiles?
