Ok, ok we all like 2 channel when we are fixed in one position. But I'm not locked in one position during a party or entertaining friends. So when I'm locked in the nerd position 2 channel rocks, other than that multi rules the open area. Enough. 7.1 audio, 5.1 audio. Are more new advance formats and will surpass 2 channel in time. If you want to be set in your ways thats your prog.

That being the case, you entertaining friends and such, you could be playing the music on a Sony boombox and it would sound the same.....background noise is all it is.

The sweet spot is a rather small area with most speakers. SDA's are a little more forgiving, but 5.1 still has a sweet spot usually smaller than 2 channel. Newer doesn't necessarily mean better. MP3s suck. Vinyl is making a decent come back, and if you went to a high end store for audio chances are they would set you down in a 2 channel room. I got into this hobby because of 5.1, and it didn't take me long to go back to 2 channel as priority. I make my compromises in HT. You act like 2 channel is like being strapped in a race car. Maybe a Polkie near by can give you a test run.

This reminds me of a quote I read recently by Bill Allin:

You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions. - Naguib Mahfouz, writer (1911- )

A clever man will always tell you answers. He will tell you things you may not even care about. His purpose is to impress. To be more accurate, his purpose is, like that of Narcissus, to see himself reflected in the reaction on your face. It may be arrogance, hubris or insecurity that causes him to seek a reaction from you. You are the fulfillment of the need of a clever man. You are the audience that satisfies his need.

A wise man will not try to convince you of anything. A wise man is trying to build himself, not to build you. He asks questions because he wants to learn more. He needs to learn more because he is aware of how little he knows about so many things. He is aware less of what he knows than of what he does not yet know. A wise man will not proselytize you. If you are willing and eager, he may guide you to find your own answers. He will not push you because he is on his own quest.

The ones who do not ask questions don't try to learn. They remain ignorant. Comfortably ignorant, as they persuade even themselves that they know as much as they need to know. Yet they are always poor. Poor of spirit because they think of themselves first. Poor of intellect because they close doors of opportunity to learn. Poor of character because they deceive even themselves, thus have no hesitation about deceiving others.

    ***End of quote***

I just wanted to throw in Emotiva XPA-5 into the mix. I have it driving LSi 15s, hard to go wrong with 350wpc@4ohms at $800.

    Just to clarify-from Emotiva:
    4 ohm rating:
    5 channels - 4 ohm = 350 watts per channel
    4 channels - 4 ohm = 375 watts per channel
    3 channels - 4 ohm = 400 watts per channel
    2 channels - 4 ohm = 450 watts per channel
    1 channel - 4 ohms = 500 watts per channel

wow, I come back from a long weekend up the mountains and see that things got somewhat dicey on this thread. :) How about I try to pick up where I left off?

So no one here has any experience with Nuforce or D-Sonic equipment? I know Rotel has a good reputation, but does anyone have direct experience with the ICEpower based 1085? I have researched these brands (and specific models) at great length, and they all get pretty positive reviews. I'm just looking for input from this forum.

In terms of my cabinet, that is a given. I have no more than 15" of depth to work with, probably less, and that's not going to change. It's a new piece of furniture specifically for my remodeled family room, picked out by my fiance. It stays. :) My current (8 yr. old) Yamaha RX-V620 fits fine in it, so I figured I should be able to find something else that fits.

But it turns out that the only amps with decent power that are less than 15" deep are the digital switching type amps. And that's okay, because I like the idea of more efficient amps. I'm just looking for first hand experience from people who have used them (Nuforce, Rotel 1085 or D-Sonic) with Polk speakers.

    Thanks everyone.

FYI: my speaker configuation is as follows:

L & R front: (LC265i with the optional enclosure cabinets)
Center: (LCi-RTS-C, which bundles the enclosure cabinet)
L & R rears: (LC80i with the optional enclosure cabinets)
    Speakers:
    . 5.2 surround config:
    . . . In-wall L & R Fronts and Center: Polk LC265i, LCi-RTS-C. In-ceiling L & R rears: Polk LC80i
    . . . Floor Subs: Polk DSWPro 500, Paradigm PDR-10
. Zone B: very old pair of Polk M 5's
. In Storage but still favored: Paradigm Monitors

    AVR:
    . Yamaha RX-V863

    Universal DVD:
    . Oppo DV-980H

    TV:
    . Sony Bravia XBR LCD 40" 720P (2005 vintage)
    . Comcast Cable, Motorola box

You should do more reading around here then. I for one have tried various icepower amps as well as Nuforce. Slowcar uses D-Sonic as well as Sherardp and I think pearsall...among others. At least one user on here owns a 1085. They all have posted their experiences on here, just do a search.

P.S. Didn't you start a thread on icepower v Nuforce a while back? I recall a conversation about it.

Yes, I did. The conversation meandered in this new direction after we initially were discussing surround sound vs. two channel sound. Last I brought up this topic, I do not recall finding anyone (besides you) that had any experience with that particular equipment, and if I recall correctly, you had tried the original Nuforce, not the newer V2 technology. Perhaps I should start a new thread.

    Thanks.

skykeys - you mentioned the depth limitation. W ehad trouble finding adequate A/V furniture, and depth was certainly an issue. The piece we purchased has a removable back panel for the bottom cabinet. The back panel is purely a cosmetic back cover and has no use for structural integrity, so I removed the back panels. Ours was 18" deep before removing the panels, but they needed to come off since you will need a couple inches in addition to the electronics' stated depth for cables, etc.

Can you go to 15.1”? If so then you should look at the Cambridge-Audio 840W amps, with 800W/ch @ 4 ohms. Their only drawback is they get hotter than Hades.
