Onkyo 507 vs Sony DTH500

Hey guys...I've become somewhat of the go to guy at work now asking about all of this stuff. I did the research for mine and now I need help with my boss.

He's looking at either getting the Onkyo 507:

or the Sony DTH500

He just bought some RM6750 speakers. I know that the Onkya has the capability of doing both audio and video through the HDMI cables, but he's worried that the Sony will be able to power his speakers better with the 500 Watts.

I personally told him to that I'd prefer the Onkyo just because I love mine.

Any help is appreciated.

Just to give you a heads up, I'm going to be asking many more questions tonight. This is for my manager, now the GM is asking me questions but I don't have time to ask all those now.

You guys might just be saving my job :)

    The difference in power output, if they're indeed accurate, is tiny and would be barely noticeable.

    I would go with the Onkyo 507.....but I'm bias because I'm a satisfied owner of a Onkyo 505.

    I would never choose Sony over Onkyo when dealing with AVR's when it's a comparable unit.

    Buckeye, even if the 100 watt per channel rating on the Sony was based on the same standard as the 80 watt rating on the Onkyo, the difference wouldn't be appreciable. The difference between 100 and 80 watts is only about 0.9dB in loudness level(e.g., 105.9dB on a brief peak vs 105dB). Looking closely at the ratings, however, we see that the numbers aren't based on the same standards. The Sony number is measured at 1KHz with 1.0% of THD(total harmonic distortion), while the Onkyo is the full 20-20KHz range and at 0.08% THD. If the numbers would be adjusted for this difference the Onkyo would have a power rating as least as high, if not slightly higher. So, although the Sony would meet that published rating(FTC amplifier power regulations would make it illegal if it didn't), it certainly isn't better than the Onkyo in that respect.

    In addition, the Onkyo has features that are superior, including a simplified version of the Audyssey automatic setup and room equalization system, including Dynamic EQ and Volume. My view is that the Onkyo is the clear choice and should make your manager very happy.

    Another nod for the Onkyo. I have been the proud owner of a TX-SR806 for over a year now, and it is a very solid unit.

    Did anyone say 805! A nice unit...I have one too.

    And I agree definitely Onkyo over Sony (outside of Sony ES series). Most Onkyos are a High Current design....lower end Sonys are NOT!

    As stated any Sony outside the ES line is going to take a back seat to an Onkyo in all areas.
