Up for sale. This unit is a little over a year old with probably 20- 30 hours on it. http://www.needledoctor.com/Pro-Ject-Tube-Box-SE-II-Phone-Preamp

I have the original box, and everything that came with it. I have NOT tube rolled it. The stock tubes are still in there and were never taken out. I am leaving for Florida tomorrow but when I get back I can take pics of the unit.

The unit sounds fantastic and you will ( or at least I did ) have to spend a lot more $$$ to get a better sound.

I ran this unit with a Adcom GFP 565 and a Denon 160 cart. Although I have to say the phono pre on the Adcom is excellent, this just gave it a little more warmth.

If I am slow replying to questions please remember I will be out of town till Monday evening.

Thanks

I would be interested, but I don't see a price listed? I currently have the Tube Box II, but not the SE version.

dkg999 I live in Bolingbrook. If you are close enough for a drive, you are more then welcome to put this unit against the one you have to see if it is worth the $.

Besides the jumpers, I am not sure what is the difference between the non se version. I think the tubes are the same. Not sure on the boards though.

Doug, if you are going to get this, let me know if you are selling yours. I need something simple to get back into LPs.

    Thanks

erniejade - I work in Schaumburg, so picking it up is no problem. I'll go ahead and take it. Send me PayPal info via PM if you want me to pay prior to picking it up. I work in Schaumburg and have a good friend in Aurora, so no problem on stopping down after work next week and picking it up.

There is some differences in the boards and the SE version has a little better bass and upper end, but the tubes are the same. I just got some new 12ax7 tubes, so it will be a good comparison.

I love it when a plan comes together! Yes, I would be selling mine as soon as I have a chance to compare the two and make sure the SE version jives with everything else in the system.

Picked this up from erniejade on Thur! I'm having a hard time believing he ever used it, because it is in mint condition! I rolled some Sovtek LPS tubes in it, looking forward to listening to it and getting the tubes settled in this weekend.

If you are on a budget and looking for a similar unit, consider the Bellari VP130. I just scored a brand new warranted unit for $170 delivered by sending a best offer to a vendor who was listing at $195 or make offer on eBay. I've been researching for a month and it looks like this model is hard to beat at even 2-3 times the money if you are looking to introduce tube sound to your phono circuit. Not quite as quiet at 80db as the Project which is in the mid 90's, but very, very good

polkatese - sorry for the delay, life has been pretty crazy lately.

I did compare the Pro-ject Tube Box II and the Tube Box II SE. The first round of comparison was stock tubes in both. I really think these both use the same 12ax7 tube in the stock versions. One thing to note is that in the SE version, the metal tube dampeners are glued on, don't waste time trying to figure out how to remove them if you change tubes (learn from my stupidity and 15 min of frustration :o ). In the stock comparison the tonal qualities were very similar, however the SE version separated the instruments more, had a wider soundstage, and moved the soundstage forward. The SE version just had a better focus, and on a few favorite songs a certain instrument or vocal both separated itself better from the rest of the music and leaped forward in the soundstage. Keep in mind these are pretty subtle improvements that the SE provides over the standard II, but I kept hearing them consistently. The standard II version is no slouch.

I then tried Sovtek LPS tubes in both versions. The Sovtek LPS tubes definetely were a winner, and I use them in the SE today. The Sovtek tubes really opened up the soundstage and smoothed out the upper mid and high end. With the Sovtek tubes in both, the differences noted above were not quite as prominent, however the SE version still sound much more focused and lively.

Interestingly enough, I had a pair of the vaunted RCA 12ax7 clear tops to try (they tested good, but not NOS) and I preferred the Sovtek LPS tubes in my system. The RCA's had a very sweet tonal sound but the soundstage really contracted. A contracted sound stage with a pair of Magnepan speakers is not good!

Polkatese - as soon as I can find the box for the II I'll respond to your PM! It's around here somewhere, I know it is!

Thanks Doug! I dig up my old cartridge, can't really play them since all my pre/pro and amp since lack phono level input. The old cartridge is an Audio Technica ATSS445E/U. It appears the SL1200MKII is still humming along great.
