Oppo 83 Blu ray , who owns one?

If the DVD is mastered at the film rate of 24fps then it should be a superior picture. However, if it's a poor master, the player loses cadence and tearing occurs. I've got it set to auto I think. Many disks seem fine, but Rome, though mastered in 24fps sometimes exhibits problems, but looks spectacular when it isn't.

Hey Ron,
What kind of panel are you using? My dissatisfaction with DVD/24 may be due to the fact I have a three year (almost) Phillips 52" LCD. At any rate, I have been more than happy with the picture produced by the BDP-83 on SD DVD's. Absolutely outstanding.-Kevin

I have to agree that for the newer lower price, the PS3 is one heck of bargain.
But - Oppo has found a beautifully positioned product in the 83 that is practically as fast as the PS3 in loading disks, practically as trouble free in glitches, has top notch upscaling(better than the PS3), SACD capability(the lower priced PS3 doesn't), better 2-channel DACs, can bit stream lossless audio, and GUI that is really nice to navigate.
Worth the extra coin? Depends on what you are looking for.

In this particular thread, I don't believe anyone has an "issue". We own BDP-83's.

FYI: The new PS3 Slim will bitstream, since they've updated the HDMI hardware. No word on SACD support, though I wouldn't expect it.
But for me, I chose the Oppo over the PS3 because I have a few DVD-Audio discs that I used with my Panasonic S97 DVD player. I also knew of a few SACD discs that I've always wanted to hear, making it a good opportunity to finally go Blu-ray. And having used the PS3 at friends' houses, I much prefer the Oppo in terms of just having a standalone player for that purpose.Equipment list:

I bought one. It is not the more expensive one that came out later and don't believe I need the new one.
I like it very much, yet need to read and explore and set it up more to get everything out of it possible. I ran it with two heavy amps, a two channel and a five channel and a pre pro but the pre pro is having bugs worked out of it presently.

I always liked my 83 and then discovered i could network it into my sonos and access my NAS drive all wirelessly.
If only Oppo would allow the 83 to connect to netflix, amazon or other streaming movie sources.
Its pretty exciting thinking in just a few years how easy it will be to receive content over the 'netOnkyo TX-SR805

I personally have seen some friends bd players operate with Netflix and seen how the picture quality is pretty bad often, sometimes worse than dvd quality because there's not enough bandwidth to send it through. I have Comcast HD cable and it's 1080i and is better than Netflix bluray quality. I personally am most concerned with picture quality because if you want to experience true HD you need 1080p that you get from the bluray disc so I just rent my bd's at the store, I got a Blockbuster about 5 miles from me, but I can uderstand if people don't have a video rental store near them to want to stream online movies.
