So, with the cash for clunkers program... they always give you 4500 dollars for eligible cars right?

WHat's to stop people from going out and buying 500 dollar pieces of junk cars, and trading them for 4500 bucks to the government? Do you have to have owned something for a certain amount of time first?

As others have stated it must be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in .

    In addition:

It must be less that 25 years old based on mfg date.

The credit can be $3,500 or $4,500. If the increase in combined fuel economy for passenger cars or trucks between the trade in vehicle vs the new is 4-9 mpg the credit is $3,500. 10+ mpg gets the $4,500. The range is lower for some trucks.

Reward all the people who bought big **** inefficient gas sucking piles o' ****, here's your $4,500

Punish all the people who bought nice little efficient clean cars, here's your tax bill to cover the $4,500 for someone else.

    Sucks.

My 1992 Honda Accord Wagon beater gets 30MPG. Can't trade that in.

Chevy commercials from 2009 "oooh ahhh, look at all these cars that we have getting 30MPG! We are so awesome! Someone pat us on the back!"

17 years later, and all we can do is the same 30MPG we were getting nearly two decades ago?? And then we brag about it??
