I'm fixing the caps on my SDA's now but I did hook it up with some rotel gear and a pr. of Newform Reseach r645's and it powers well. I have to turn the pre-amp up to 10 and above to really play at a medium level and up to 11.5 to play loud but putting at 12:00 takes the volume on my speakers past what I feel is nessesary. Is there an impedance issue here? I think so.

Hey John, Yes it is . With the rotel stuff. I'll try an older kenwood pre-amp and see what happens with the volume issue. The sound stage is nothing like I heard with the polks either. It's there but just isn't WIDE...Oh how the bass is tight and solid. I guess this is what I've read about for thirty yrs.I've never done an A/B comparison but my hobby is progressing now.

I think your troubles lie somewhere in the SDA connections or perhaps phase issue.

    Hey John,
You misunderstood me I think. ..I'm listening to a set of Newform Research R645 speakers right now with my best system set-up.It's very nice indeed but I want to have my SDA caps put back on to seal the 4 holes each one requires to mount before I test the Carver on them. I'm slow getting to it I know but I will. I will, I will.
I also found a triangular tear that you can put your little finger through on one of the 15" subs rubber surround. I fixed that real easy.I don't know how I missed it but I have been feeling real rough in the past 9 months.I thought the the bass was awsome before, whooh....what will it be like now:rolleyes:

Well I got up the energy and went out to listen to some thriller and I did then some other music and I thought it still sounded compressed. I had found a ULTEC cd player years ago at a pawn shop and knew it is high end so I just swaped players and wow. I gained 4 ft to each side of the R645's.. The detail is even better.I'm going to glue one of the SDA caps back together now.One step closer;)to SDA land.

It must be 100* outside.. whew.glad I don't have to work in it this yr. the tv shows it's only 88. feels alot hotter.

I forgot to continue this thread with updates..SORRY. Well the caps were reglued and put back on. The 15" passive was repaired as I said earlier. The interconnect sockets were replaced as I said earlier. New interconnect cable was bought thru POLK audio. I purchased 4 new RDO-194 tweeters from POLK. The sound kept getting better and it was great to begin with except spuratic distortion here and there.

Well , my friend John from SC. came up and while he was here we heard the distortion again later that night. John noticed a mwoofer not moving in unison with the other three. He was right! I had rewired it wrong or it WAS wired wrong from the begining. Now the SDA's are even better.

It's funny how you think something sounds great and then you change something and ** It seems to sound better. I just thought of the old saying,"you can't miss what you've never had"
I think it applies to my advancement into finer gear and SDA technology.

I'm really glad you guys nudged me to buy this amp. I can't think of ever wanting to upgrade this at all.;)

Also, The Sunfire amp is always cool to the touch ,no matter how much I play or how loud.I am very impressed with it.;)

I now have to move some speakers out of the way so I can place the SDA's against the wall. The Owners manual says the bass will increase the closer they are. That should balance their sound better for they are just a little on the bright side.

have any of you have had the chance to compare sunfire amps to say classe, macintoch, jeff Rowland, Mark Levinson, Krell, Bryston etc.
I wounder how does the sunfire stack up when comparing to these amps?
I had a rotel amp for a couple of days before buying the sunfire and since then I have not been able to make any comparisons.

Bingo! While it might be nice to compare, Why bother... because of the "name"? Who cares.

As it is the Sunfire isn't exactly cheap new or used. It's main benefits are loads of power at a reasonable weight. That's why I got one.:)

I've owned Onkyo Integra M-504's, Harman Kardon Citation 22? Rotel RMB 985? and I guess they all sound a little different to me but I liked them all just as much as this Sunfire in their own ways.

This is a hobby for me. I use to be a perfectionist about everything!, but life and working has worn down my desire for that considerably.Sound stages are cool, depth , pressence I now can identify and enjoy.I'm happy in this respect.

A Sunfire with wattage meters would be real cool . I know a couple of amps or a receiver or two heated up pretty well after I bought the SDA's and was experimenting with what it took to power them. What ever is going on in this sunfire ,I still like the sound that comes though my speakers still. That's what it's about in a nut shell for me.

I liked KLH model 12's [my first great quality listen for the time.(advent era)]I think 30 yrs. ago and probably still would today, BUT, I'll hear what's wrong them now.:D Can't miss what I haven't heard...maybe one day I'll hear Classe' McIntosh Krell and etc. and I bet I'll like them too.:D

Don't get me wrong, I really like my sunfire, but I do wounder... Right now I am considering changing my main speakers, I been looking at the B&W 805s or 803s used of-cource. Most of the B&W are pared with rotel, classe, Mc., krell and so on. I don't find many people signature's saying they are using sunfire and hence my question.
I might have other speaker brands in mind but one thing is for sure they seam to want power.
What I like about the sunfire, which I bought new, is that it had the power I was looking for, it can go down to 2 ohms if nedded and most importatly it weights 40lb compare to 100-150lb for the same amp in some of the other brands.
Again just curious, after all sunfire is a different implementation than the other amps. Even the new ICE amps are different than sunfire as far as getting to generate the power. which is what I can talk about because since I have never had an opportunity to hear them side by side I can not compare and say this A amp, or AB amp sounds about the same as my sunfire.

This is usually because the people who can afford B&W 805's can also afford amplifiers of the same price range.

Sunfire for the price is difficult to beat in price/performance. It similar to the discussion of a Sunfire vs an Adcom... It's not that one is bad and one is good, but for the price point it's a great combination.

I agree with you olilugo, I don't see the sunfires in sigatures that much either.
I see alot of Carver gear . I wondered about that myself. I don't know yet.

I liked telling people to try and pick up my M-504's or the Citation 22? (50 lbs. each)but the balls they had is what's really important I know. I've read alot of posts on here the M-504 is the little guy compared to his Bigger brothers.I could only imagine their power:eek:.

There might be a "heat = power" thing that keeps people from buying Sunfire.
I have read also the sound output is dry to some ears.

I'm still listening in an environment that is repulsive to any audiophile but I AM DOWNSIZING now to regain acoustical air.:D

I'm very happy with my Sunfire/D-Sonic combo, if I ever step up and buy the Swans or B&W speakers I'll still power them with the with same combo. Sunfire is a very good amp and has excellent power. Give it a listen and if you arent happy, then Classe it is.

Hey guys I need some feedback....I have the opportunity to buy an Emotiva XPA-5 or a Sunfire Cinema Grand 5 and am wondering which would be best at driving my Lsi15/LsiC/Lsi9's? The XPA is about 1yr old and has a transferable warranty and the Sunfire has a production date of 2001. The Sunfire is also a bit more expensive than the XPA. I use a Sony STR-DA5ES as a pre/pro and an Oppo BDP-83 for movies and music. I am currently using an Audiometric AM441 amp(circa 1980's) to power my left/right mains, but am looking to upgrade to a mult/ch amp. I use my system 50/50 for music and movies. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Welcome to CP L2L.

Amps are designed to last for years, so I wouldn't worry about the age of the Sunfire. Both will run your LSI's with no problems & power to spare. You can't go wrong with either one.

I love my Sunfire & will keep it till it dies.

My HT is similar; 4 LSi15s and a PSB Synchrony One Center (replaced an LSiC). I am using a Sony 7100ES as a pre going to a Sunfire TGA5400, and it sounds great. I recently went Bluray with a Oppo BD83 and am just amazed at how good Bluray sounds. My vote at this time is with Sunfire.
