Trying to help a friend(cheap but good HT stuff)

I'm trying to help my friend who currently has NO receiver, but want's to get a HT/music/party system put together. He has some Infinity reference 2000.4(pair) and 2000.2(pair) and a sony center channel. I practically gave that stuff to him to help him get started. So he needs a receiver with a xover obvioiusly for around $200(new or factory refurb), and a subwoofer around $150 if possible. He will be using it for HT/music, and I'm sure for partys:eek: So what would be the best options? I found some good prices on some Denon/Onk refurbs, and I'm not sure where to start on the sub issue. Basically he has about $350-400 saved up for a receiver/sub. Before you start laughing, I know my stuff needs some replacing to:D I'm working on that slowly. Anyway, what would be your recommendations? He's no audiophile, but he isn't a dummy either, so.... I just trying to help him out as he has no idea where to start. Thanks in advance for your help guys!

Well hopefully he do not mind used because thats more bang for the buck purchasing with his budget.
I say for avr purposes, I recently bought mine which I am using as a pre/pro, the Harman Kardon Avr from Harman ebay site for 245 shipped to my door(they can be had for less than that if you watch their ebay site). I dont think you will find an avr with the features the hk has in that price range. Also for subs, Acoustic Audio appears to be a decent brand for subs and you can get them on ebay for 169 shipped for their 10 inch sub and about 199 shipped for their 12. thats a little over 400 but that avr has preouts, all the HD codecs and enough bells and whistles to keep him happy for a little while. Others will chime in. -
Suggest he start saving and do it half way right the first time. Check out the flea market for good deals also. I'm the tunes will be blasting and next thing you know tweeters blown, etc due to going the cheap route with a less than capable AVR.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

That's what I told him but..... I told him to spend $350 on the receiver and save up more and get a sub a little later, and then move on to the rest of the speakers. He's not the patient type, and I'm surprised he has saved as much as he has:rolleyes: Oh, and 5.1 is fine, but 7.1 dual zone would work to(so he can eventually set up some deck speakers later.Sony 40" LCD

He could go demo/used with the AVR, and get a higher line model, that's only a year or two old. Steer him towards a unit with pre-outs. (a new $350 AVR likely won't have them) The last two Denons I bought, were demos that the store wanted to clear out, due to the new models coming in. Half price, both times.
Explain to him that unless he likes buying things twice, patience is his friend. -
I think that's the route I have him talked into finally. Now how about a sub around $200 or less?:)Sony 40" LCD

Also, I just looked at the Acoustic Audio stuff on ebay. Those prices and stats seem to be a little too good for the price? What gives? Has anyone on here had experience with their products?Sony 40" LCD
