Idea for CD player "preamp"

I woke up today and was thinking about my preamp. I am looking at replacing my CD player (which has a volume control, an older Denon) with a CD player that doesn't have this.

So anyway, most CD players have plenty of power to drive the amp to clipping if plugged straight into the amp.

I'm laying in bed thinking about this earlier today.

Instead of using a pre-amp, why not just build a simple box that has a high quality potentiometer in it to adjust the level of the CD players output ??

Walla - no electronics, no power supply, no big long path of crap between the CD player and the amp.

Surely if someone would build something like this people would buy it.

Interesting idea. I don't know much about what you want to do so I will defer to some of the other members to say it is a good idea or not.

There are several. One of the best is the Pass Lab B1 buffer and I believe Promethius makes one, as well as half a dozen other companies make a passive line level controller.

My pre also runs in passive mode. The signal sees the input switch and the vol control and that's it when in passive.

Be careful not all systems (nor recrodings) like a completely passive controller. Components have to be choosen carefully.

P.s. I love the advantage of my pre to run passive or active by the flip of a switch.......best of both worlds and I enjoy bothe settings equally depending on the recording.

They already exist. Here is the VPC•3 Passive Controller from Channel Islands Audio.

I agree with H9 that they don't work in every setup.

Creek also makes a pretty nice little passive pre/volume control. The CIA one is also supposed to be a very good one.

IMHO sometimes a little colorization by the pre is not such a bad thing.

Ah ... well, I'll have to check those out.

I don't really understand why they call them "passive preamps" as they aren't preamping anything. The term passive controller (CIaudio) seems more proper.

Since when is "preamp=before amp" so hard to understand?

Interesting, I always thought of it as signal pre-amplification ... the amplification of the signal occurring before the larger amplification of the signal in the amp.
