I went with GFA-555 mark1 original series.
I found one locally...in impeccable shape...in it's original box.
I was incredibly lucky...guy I bought from was very cool we shot the chit for like 2-3 hours....he let it go for 400$...he was kind enuff to test setup it and crank it for me before I left on his own speakers.
I been running it now for about a week..my 710 pre-amp hasn't gotten here yet..but I got the laptop feeding it direct.....WOW WOW WOW....the clarity is incredible.....the bass is much much tighter and the speaker's don't fatigue at all on loud volumes.....I may never buy another Sony product again....I was DEFINITELY getting clippage at the top end before.
I find no need to crank it 100% I'm satisfied before it....but even more importantly is how clear everything is still maintained. I can't wait for the pre-amp to get here and for the Oppo as well.
Thanks to everyone who pitched in. I am sure the MK II doesn't bring any downsides as the core of this unit must be hard to mess up....I opted for the original series from your opinions and from habitually also finding more value in simpler sometimes older designs...I sometimes do maintenance or upgrades myself and the simpler the better ....I found many reviews of ppl who upgraded to 5802's(new model) and missed their old 555's!
Highly impressed!
(Woops sorry I had follow-ed up and thanked everyone previously. Oh well double it!)Cool stuff: Adcom GFA-555, GFP-710, Oppo BDP-83, Monitor 10's w/RDO198s, rebuilt and modded XO: Sonicap/Mundorf topside, Daytons Low.

Congrats.
I run an original 555 myself and love it. Even though it probably needs a few fixes at this point. Even as an aging unit is sounds better than a lot of things out there. I agree with your assessment of its sound. These things are the TANKS of the audio world. They may not be the best but they run FOREVER and sound good enough!
Enjoy...

Best wishes! I have two original GFA-555, bought them when first released. I use them to power my Acoustat 2 + 2 electrostatic speakers and I love them. I also was lucky enough to live near the company warehouse during the 80's and 90's and the tech guys took good care of me as far as mods went. They are tanks and have lots of power. You couldn't pry them away from me! DJ

Thank you guys. He could use one of either model to push the pair and use his other leftovers for other systems:)..
I have Onkyo amps, M 504, m502, and a Citation amp(21?) that I plan on setting up soon. Can't wait to hear my sda srs2's through them. Oh, the new tweeters(rdo-194's) are smooth aren't they.:).waiting on two more..Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
