Any experience with Adcom GFA-585?

This thing is on ebay, being sold as is which scares me, but I called the seller and they are a consignment shop and said that they dont have any way to test the gear but said that the guy who brought it in said it was working. 250wpc into 8 ohm and 400 into 4ohm. So it would be a nice upgrade from my carver receiver at 150wpc. What do these amps usually go for? Anyone ever own one, if so how are they?

They are awesome bad **** amps for sure if they do not have any problems with DC offset. I just sold mine, and I hated selling it:( If it is not local, or cheap stay away. I can fix them for Polkies cheap, but the shipping is the problem. They are heavy.

hard to find...i gave up looking for them..but "as is" is usually a warning sign....ask them to honor a DOA gaurantee......Cool stuff: Adcom GFA-555, GFP-710, Oppo BDP-83, Monitor 10's w/RDO198s, rebuilt and modded XO: Sonicap/Mundorf topside, Daytons Low.

I was able to find out the following information from the owner: There is a little noise in the left channel at start up that goes away. Other than that he claims that it works great. The 585 was probably the only Adcom product I ever had any problems with. Unfortunately I didn't get to spend enough time with it "working" to form much of a conclusion about it. I ended up trading it off "as is" at a dealer towards an Aragon at the time.

I try to stay away from "AS IS " deals.

Adcom had a bad run of caps from the manufacturer. Those ended up in some of the GFA 585 and GFA 565 amps and are prone to premature failure. They leak the corrosive electroytics all over the input boards and end up causing all kinds of issues including DC offset and full failure which can damage other parts.
The boards can be cleaned and parts replaced but it's a very painstaking labor intensive process that someone needs to know how to do properly (Ben does). Once the boards are cleaned and repopulated you're good to go for 20 more years. Also note new boards are no longer avail from Adcom
Note: not all units were affected......there's really no way to tell and obviously a unit that has had the procedure done either as a preventative measure or as a repair is the unit to look for. My brother has a 585 and has had no issues with it...........usually by now if the unit has the defective caps they rear their ugly head.
