ive been wanting the onkyo 805 or 805 but im trying to get one off ebay for around 500 and no luck yet....

I saw on my local craigslist someone has the rxv2700 and its 140w per channel...3 hdmi etc...

but i read it does not do the new DTS HD or Dolby HD and the hdmi is 1.2a (dont know what that means, I think they are 1.3a now)???

I do have a ps3 but havent watched a bluray or even played it in months...

should I hold out for the 805/806 or is this yamaha a super good deal at like $450-500...

also I heard yami and polk sound really bright and onkyo/polk is a better match?

Thanks again!!

I am not a really big on the AVR's and HDMI but I would do some more reading. I just read on Audioholics about a new version of HDMI. 1.4.

If you are concerned about HDMI then this should be a good read. If you are like me then all I need is DVI or Component with a digital coax cable for my HT.

I just sold a Yamaha RX-V861 reciever. It had nice H/T sound but it was a little on the bright side with my RTIA5's in 2 channel mode. Also I found that the Yamaha sound seemed "in your face", if you know what I mean. I spent a couple months in here and reading on the net, trying to decide whether to get a power amp or a new reciever. Finally I decided to get a new reciever. Then I had to decide what to get. A lot of guys in here have been buying the new Pioneer SC-05 and SC-07 recievers. Unfortunatly, I live in Canada and was unable to find one for less than 1,700 cnd. I opted to try an older Pioneer Elite reciever and the VSX-49TXi was what I found. It is a 6 year old model but a real nice piece of gear. It doen't have HDMI but this doesn't matter to me and it sounds like it doesn't matter to you as well.

So I what I suggest you do is research into some avrs that are a few years old and may fit you needs for power and sound. There are some real gems out there for sale, given the current economic climate.

    Good Luck

If you have a PS3 and you need HDMI remember the PS3 decodes Tru-HD Dolby and DTS formats and sends it over HDMI as LPCM, BOTH the Yamaha 1.2a and the Onkyo's 1.3 HDMI formats can handle that. You can play those formats with either receiver with a PS3. I haven't heard the Yamaha but I prefer Onkyos with Polk M, TSI, and RTis!

I'm sure the 2700 is a good receiver as well.

1.4...now I have to read that nonsense. 1.3 is pretty much the standard and will do ALL you will need it to do! The rest is just the industry playing with 'us'.

Don't get too hung up on bitstream of the HD audio. I have been using a 2600 with RTi8s for quite a while. I enjoy the new audio formats over HDMI in LPCM as cnh mentioned. It sounds fantastic. The other issue of importance are the preouts should you chose to eventually go that route. Some people consider this combo bright, but I personally enjoy it. The price for the 2700 you mentioned is a very sweet deal. Remember this model is 2-3 years old now and I believe it retailed for around $1500.00 :D
