805 or 806??

Hey guys, sorry for this but I have always what if. I purchased an Onkyo TX-SR806 although I had planned on buying the TX-SR805. The only reason I went with the 806 over the 805 was it had just come out and I figured it would have been a better unit and bought it without ever really comparing the two.I know there are differences between the 805 and the 806 for example the Burr Brown DAC's and it is much heavier than the 806 so I'm assuming a better amplifier section?? I was thinking about selling my 806 and buying an 805, but would this be a wise move or not much of an upgrade? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I think you know I like the 805 better for sound....but what I would do is get a power amp because that would be even better and the 806 is a pretty good unit. A good external amp will give you the sound you crave and you can just keep your unit. If you want better DACs they're more important for music so just plan to upgrade your CD player to something with Burr Brown or Wolfsons.

That's what I would do. I have a Denon that's the model below the 3800 series (2807) and with an Adcom powering speakers and the Denon as a pre/pro it sounds better than the model above it--heck better than the AVR 4308! Get yourself a used power amp...well worth the upgrade! My M70s sound like a new speaker with the Adcom!

Thanks cnh, I had a feeling you would chime in on this thread. Since like you said I know how much you like the 805, lol. I think I will take your advice and get an external amp, which was my plan from the start, I was just wondering.

I'd agree with cnh. I've heard numerous times that the 805 is a slightly better AVR than the 806, but it would still be somewhat of a lateral move. Your best bet would probably be moving to an external amp. There are plenty of used options out there that won't break the bank.

I have an 805. The 805 amps are better than the 806, but not enough to justify selling the 806 and getting an 805.

Unless you are wealthy or not getting enough power to your front main speakers, you should forget about adding any external apmplification.

I wasn't aware that you had to be wealthy to get external amplification.

It's a little bit more than "not getting enough power". It's more about not getting clean enough, high quality power. Wattage is a little more than simply a number.

Having owned an Onk 605 and now 875, I wouldn't even consider making that move. Most nice stand-alone CDP's and Blu-ray have decent dacs. And it is highly unlikely that you will notice a significant improvement in power. Save you money and spend it on a nice two-channel amp when the time come. Also, the 806 will probably be easier to sell in the future because it is newer.

Like the others I don't get this suggestion Mike. Buying an amp has nothing to do with wealth. Good, clean power will give his speakers better imaging, and sound. Any speaker would benefit from it, and besides that a nice amp will hold you over for quite a long time, all for under 1k dollars in many cases.

    Say Mike,

Are you pulling our leg here! Because you know what I run, and we've both agreed that M70s and other Polk speakers with power-handling peaks over 200 watts 'all' benefit from good power amps!

I gotta agree with the others here. Keep your 806 and add a good three channel amp. You'll notice a much bigger differerence with the amp than you will changing recievers. The 806 is a great home theater preamp and is decent for music as well.
