The XA1 is a really solid upscaler, and is built like a tank. Whoever ends up with it will be a happy buyer. Good luck with the sale.My HT

I knew nothing about this when I bought it. So you had to imagine the surprise I had when I hooked it up in a 2 channel rig. I couldn't believe it. This thing would eat an Oppo for breakfast and want seconds. Doesn't play SACD's though. But who cares. I didn't have many anyway... Red book play back is stellar for what it is...

It came in last Monday, and my first thought was how I couldn't believe how it was built like a tank! Man, you guys weren't kidding about that.
I finally got a chance to hook it up this weekend. I already had a HD-A35, and wanted this as a secondary unit because it had 5.1 analog outputs. No 1080p was not really a deal breaker for me since it would be on a 34" Sony XBR widescreen/flatscreen CRT that only does 720p/1080i anyway.
Even though I wanted the 5.1 analog outs, I at first hooked it up only via it's optical output to the Marantz pre-amp/tuner/processor in the Polk DS7200 system, and discovered something very interesting that some of you may or may not already know about - when Dolby Digital Plus or True HD is output via bitstream, the Polk/Marantz processor was showing DTS was being received. This perplexed me, so I double checked all connections and settings, and they were all good. Then I did some googling, and discovered that in the first two generation Toshiba HD DVD players, this is normal. They actually send out the newer Dolby hi-rez formats via toslink or optical bitstream as DTS at 1.5mbps! For example, the HD-A2 does this, but the HD-A3 won't, and neither did my HD-A35. This was a very nice, unexpected bonus. -
Right on! Glad to hear your enjoying it.
